UK woman cited by police for transphobic abuse of trans woman, trend developing

maddiehalsteadnewsTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Halstead (UK) Police cited an apparent neighbor for transphobic abuse following a hate crime investigation into a claim made by a trans woman.

On April 22, a trans woman named Maddie reported to the police that she was a victim of transphobic abuse by a woman whose apparent intention was to drive her out of her home. The police did investigate and last week, handed the woman a warning.

——-

The source for this was woefully short in details. However, the outcome was positive for the trans woman. Although the abuser only received a warning, we’re seeing a subtle trend of trans people reporting their abusive neighbors and getting positive results.

British airline mogul loses bet, agrees to be a ‘tranny for a day’

(Photo: biography.com)

(Photo: biography.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Richard Branson,Virgin Air CEO, lost a wager to AirAsia X boss Tony Fernandes, and agrees to dress in drag and serve as a flight “stewardess” on Fernandes’ airline.

While I cannot say for sure if this exploitation was initiated by the writer of the source article or if Branson and Fernandes are pulling off a PR stunt, but either way, it slams trans people — ‘You lose, you gotta be a tranny,’ we’re sick of this.

From the eTN article: “Branson is keen on putting a check mark on what may very well be called a kind of “final frontier,” when he becomes the first gender-bending airline CEO in history to serve on an actual flight. Branson himself has admitted to have “done some outrageous things” in his life, but becoming a tranny for a day “will be up there with the best of them.”

It becomes apparent the writer of the article, Nelson Alcantara, eTN’s editor-in-chief, thinks Branson is doing us a favor: “While the distinction of being the first commercial airline to hire transsexuals as flight attendants belongs to Thailand’s PC Air, Branson could pave the way for airlines to provide equal opportunities for transsexuals who aspire to become Virgin flight attendants.”

Trans people don’t want to become flight attendants because they are transgender, they just want an equal opportunity at becoming a flight attendant as anyone else.

Both Branson and the writer are in dire need of education on all things trans.

[UPDATED: Firestorm brewing] Transgender UK primary school teacher found dead at home

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATED, see below.] Lucy Meadows, a teacher at primary school in Accrington in the UK was found dead in her home. The police say her death is not suspicious. Meadows only recently began presenting as female. Reports say an autopsy has been completed but no cause of death has been announced yet.

St Mary Magdalen’s School’s Karen Hardman:  “News of Lucy’s death has come as a tremendous shock to everyone in the school. She was a greatly valued member of our staff and we send her family and friends our sympathy and prayers.”

More details are expected to come out soon. Stay tuned. [See update below]

———

Lucy Meadows was subject to a transphobic hit piece in the UK media recently. Any connection between that and her death at this time would be pure speculation in the absence of an exact cause of death. The UK group Trans Media Watch is closely monitoring the situation and new details would likely come from them first: http://www.facebook.com/groups/transmediawatch/?fref=ts

New link. This is a nice summary of what Lucy Meadows had to deal with: http://politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2013/03/22/comment-how-the-press-hounded-lucy-meadows

Teacher due to begin new term at school as a woman is found dead – Manchester Evening News.

———

UPDATED March 22, 2013. Although the cause of death has yet to be announced, a firestorm has developed over press harassment prior to Lucy Meadows’ death. Here are some excerpts from the more reputable UK sources.

Transgender writer Jane Fae:

The story of Lucy Meadows’s death is both tragic and appalling in what it says not only about how the British press operates, but also about their inability to reform themselves or self-regulate. Like the recovered addict, they are well-behaved only so long as the spotlight is on their behaviour. Remove that spotlight for an instant and it’s back, at once, to all the bad old ways.

http://politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2013/03/22/comment-how-the-press-hounded-lucy-meadows

From The Independent (apparently a bit more sensitive this time):

“In an email, seen by The Independent, sent to a supporter before her death, Lucy Meadows describes how she had to dodge waiting reporters and photographers as she went to work at the primary school in Accrington, Lancashire.

It emerged yesterday that Ms Meadows, who was Nathan  Upton before the sex change, contacted the Press Complaints Commission, which circulated a note urging editors to call off reporters and photographers from pursuing the teacher. . . .

Actor Hugh Grant and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell used their Twitter feeds to highlight the case claiming it illustrated another example of press misconduct. . . .”

Full story: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/transgender-primary-school-teacher-who-took-own-life-had-sought-protection-from-media-hounding-before-her-death-8546468.html

The Guardian:

“On Friday, more than 3,000 people signed a petition urging the [Daily] Mail to fire Littlejohn and demanding a formal apology for the stress and pain, the petitioners said had been caused to Meadows by the columnist, the paper and its readership. A vigil has also been organised outside the Daily Mail offices in Kensington, west London, on Monday at 6.30pm.

On Friday Kate Green, the Labour MP for Urmston and Stretford and shadow minister for women and equalities, said: “It is totally unacceptable to humiliate people or invade someone’s privacy when there is absolutely no public interest in the story. . .”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/mar/22/trans-teacher-lucy-meadows-press?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487

A vigil is planned for Monday: http://www.facebook.com/events/158234694340156/158241987672760/?notif_t=plan_mall_activity

I should note that the offending article published in the Daily Mail being referred to in the articles above have been removed from the newspaper’s website. However, I’ve seen statements from trans activists that archives of the story exists.

Disturbing UK gender ID “fraud” sexual intimacy case complicated by age misrepresentation

Chris Wilson (Photo: carriesfairfield.com)

Chris Wilson (Photo: carriefairfield.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A Scottish trans man faces jail time after admitting to  ‘obtaining sexual intimacy by fraud’. Chris Wilson supposedly ‘did not tell his girlfriends he was trans’ before getting intimate with them and misrepresented his age, telling them he was 17 when he was actually was much older. Complicating the matter further is the possibility one of the girls wasn’t truthful about her age either. Either way, he is now on the sex offenders’ register and may be jailed.

The Scottish Transgender Alliance’s Nathan Gale told the Gay Star News: ‘We are very concerned for trans people because it could set a precedent forcing them to reveal their gender history to new sexual partners.’

Transgender activist Jane Fae, also speaking to Gay Star News, said her previous conversations with the prosecution (Crown Prosecution Service) following an earlier case somewhat similar to this one has her concerned that ‘in practice any trans man or trans woman who keeps their gender identity to themselves runs the risk of being charged’.

———

Clearly, there should never be a law where a trans person is required to reveal to their sexual partner their gender ID history. This case, however, is complicated with age misrepresentation — people may or may not have been of legal age to have an intimate relationship and this ought to be the primary focus here.  I do agree with Ms. Fae who has stated that an incident like this is a ‘time bomb waiting to explode.’

UK trans student verbally abused, shoved out of university restroom

(photo: leedsstudent.org)

(photo: leedsstudent.org)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Two females in a restroom at the Student Union in UK’s Leeds University apparently grabbed a trans woman’s breasts then shoved her out while verbally abusing her. The university’s security was called and the issue resolved to the victim’s satisfaction.

A Student Union spokesperson said security explained to the two females of the university’s respect for transgender students’ needs and choices. According to a student newspaper, the two females then understood the error of their ways. The victim, Alexis, says ‘misgendering is something I expect, but grabbing my breasts and shoving me is completely unacceptable.’ However, Alexis did not wish further action taken against the two females.

While this incident ended well, it could have easily gone the other way as in the case of a Maryland McDonald’s incident which a trans woman was brutally beaten by two female customers for using the female’s restroom. Captured on video, the beating resulted in one adult female getting sent to a lengthy prison term and a minor sent to juvenile hall.

‘Lifestyle choice’ results in UK housing association apology to trans woman

Stephanie (Photo: gofundme.com)

Stephanie Elliot Lowther (Photo: gofundme.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A UK housing association staffer told a trans woman complaining about transphobic neighbors that she couldn’t be relocated because she made a “choice” to be transgender. Stephanie Elliott Lowther then took her complaint higher up the chain at Erimus Housing who then responded with apologies and promises of diversity training for their staffers.

We’ve seen these things before and this is exactly why housing in specifically noted in many trans rights legislation and policies. If you are being abused by your neighbors, you may have options, including lawsuits. While I can’t say this is a solution for everyone, there is a case where a South African trans person sued her her long time transphobic neighbor and won. Read about that case here: http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/10/13/judge-tells-trans-persons-neighbor-to-pay-up-for-years-of-harassment-and-hate-comments/

UK’s Telegraph newspaper publishes yanked Julie Burchill transgender hate piece

Toby Young of the UK's Telegraph (Photo: socialregister.co.uk)

Toby Young of the UK’s Telegraph (Photo: socialregister.co.uk)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — In the midst of this ongoing explosion in the transgender community over the Julie Burchill trans-hate piece that was pulled from the UK’s The Observer newspaper, another UK paper, the Telegraph, has recently republished it on their website.

The Telegraph‘s Toby Young argued that The Observer’s actions amounted to censorship. He stated that he was a friend of Burchill and that she had given him permission to republish it as part of an article for his paper.

————–

It appears clear to me that ad hominem attacks like Burchill’s article, especially when used against a marginalized group of people, have no place in entities other than those that exploit to pad their pocketbooks. This appears pretty much what the Telegraph is doing. Young could have still made his argument without republishing the piece, but now, any point he had is lost.

Likewise, Burchill could have easily made her arguments without using ad hominem comments to engage a public discourse on something that concerned her, however, by doing a hate piece, she invalidated any point she was trying to make.

The Guardian, The Observer: Thumbs up.

Telegraph: Thumbs down.

UK’s “Observer” owns up to transphobic article publication blunder

observer muholland pritchardTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — While the massive fallout from Julie Burchill’s now-pulled transphobic article continues, the United Kingdom publisher is owning up to what is, as Observer readers’ editor Stephen Pritchard, described as ‘a collective failing of editing by Observer staff’.

Burchhill’s article, which, among other things, contained transphobic slurs directed at trans people. The paper pulled the article after a massive social media protest from the trans community and allies.

I wrote briefly about Burchhill’s article here: http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2013/01/13/intl-trans-community-comes-to-the-defense-of-uk-doctor-transphobic-article-published-in-the-guardian/

The paper’s editor, John Mulholland:

“It was a mistake to publish it. I could not let the mistake stand. I didn’t want that legacy for the Observer. The idea that I would compound a mistake by continuing to publish the piece online is absurd. . . .

“It was not a complicated decision to make. The responsibility I had was to try to make amends to a group of people we had needlessly and mistakenly offended.”

Prichard stated that the editor will have discussions with the trans community shortly. “A lesson has been learned,” Prichard said.

Meanwhile, the Burchill article has released pent-up anger within the trans community beyond the mere publication of it. The suppression or rejection of trans woman by certain vocal cis women has been a point of contention for some time and has now come to a head. I’ve found this site a good place to stay on top of the Julie Burchill affair: http://www.facebook.com/groups/transmediawatch/

[UPDATED] Int’l trans community comes to the defense of UK doctor; transphobic article published in “The Guardian”

Dr. Richard Curtis (Photo guardian.uk)

Dr. Richard Curtis (Photo guardian.uk)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE: Transphobic article pulled. See below.] In recent days the international transgender community has responded angrily to two different incidents, both potentially impacting the well-being of trans people in the United Kingdom in a negative way.

The first began when it became known that the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) was investigating Dr. Richard Curtis, a rare physician who does gender re-assignment support outside the NHS. Although not everyone can afford his services, he is respected among many trans people for providing a rare alternative to the NHS path.

Trans activists fear the GMC’s actions could eliminate trans patients options, leaving everyone with just one choice — the NHS system, which some trans activists say is ‘slow, controlling and unsympathetic.’

The response from the trans community not only focused on Dr. Curtis but also revealed the many shortcomings of the NHS from the trans perspective.

Read more about this uproar in this piece by trans woman Jane Fae: The real trans scandal is not the failings of one doctor but cruelty by many | Jane Fae | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk.

——

The second storm followed the publication of a transphobic article in the UK’s The Guardian. Written by Julie Burchill and titled “Transsexuals should cut it out”, the piece clearly crosses the border into deep transphobia territory.

Here’s a snippet: “Shims, shemales, whatever you’re calling yourselves these days – don’t threaten or bully us lowly natural-born women, I warn you.”

That’s quite enough to get a flag thrown for me.

UPDATE — Jan. 14, 2013: The Guardian has pulled the transphobic article. See below:

Following an uproar from the trans community, the publication’s Readers’ editor says he will be looking into the matter, however, you can still contact them and voice your opinion:

Statement from John Mulholland, editor of The Observer

Observer.co.uk, Monday 14 January 2013 12.48 EST

Statement from John Mulholland, editor of The Observer:

We have decided to withdraw from publication the Julie Burchill comment piece ‘Transsexuals should cut it out’. The piece was an attempt to explore contentious issues within what had become a highly-charged debate. The Observer is a paper which prides itself on ventilating difficult debates and airing challenging views. On this occasion we got it wrong and in light of the hurt and offence caused I apologise and have made the decision to withdraw the piece. The Observer Readers’ Editor will report on these issues at greater length.

Stranger violently punches trans woman entering UK pub, gets away

Giovanna Del Nord (Photo: This is Leicestershire)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Knock-out punches, of course, don’t happen often without some warning, but Giovanna Del Nord found herself waking up on the floor of a Leicester pub, last remembering a fist headed straight to her face.

Del Nord said she just walked in the door and headed directly to the bar, without speaking to anyone when she was attacked. There wasn’t even enough time to recognize the person who hit her. Del Nord is relatively new in town and has no enemies. She believes she was targeted because she is transgender. Leicestershire Police are investigating the attack and are asking for the public’s assistance.

What I find troubling here is that this violence occurred in a public place without any exchange of words or other foreboding signs allowing one to take precautions or defend themselves. On the other hand, there’s always the chance the perpetrator was triggered by something else and Del Nord’s trans status didn’t have anything to do with it.

This is one mystery that I hope gets cleared up, pronto!

Taunts, struggles drives gifted UK trans woman to her death

Natasha Lauren Brown (Photo: News Group Newspapers)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Hands down, suicide is among the most difficult thing for me to write about, but it is such a huge elephant silently stumbling around in the trans world, it does no good to any of us to ignore its presence.

Last July we were reminded again suicide can happen to the best of us when prominent Canadian trans activist Kyle Scanlon took his life. http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/toronto-canada-trans-community-leader-kyle-scanlon-dies/

Indeed, a recent and widely shared study indicated that upwards of 40% of trans people attempt suicide in their lifetimes (the cis population rate is under 2%). http://endtransdiscrimination.org/PDFs/NTDS_Exec_Summary.pdf

Just weeks ago there were a few discussions at social media websites where we saw “experts” claiming the trans suicide rate isn’t as bad as the study and us writers are making it out to be. If this is true, they need to make their case, backed up with evidence — not just merely denying a suicide problem exists.

It is said Staffordshire University (UK) student Natasha Lauren Brown began a downward spiral after she was taunted and beaten. Her life ended May 14, 2012 from liver failure after she ODed on paracetamol.

Although gifted, Brown struggled with depression and other issues throughout most of her teens. It was only in the last few years that she decided to officially move forward and change her gender identity. Even though Brown had contact with mental health professionals, her family believes their daughter would still be alive if the UK’s mental health services we better equipped to handle gender identity issues — something the family felt these professionals came up short on.

Brown’s mother:  “We’d just like to say we strongly believe the mental health services could have done more to help her than they did.”

Staffordshire University student union president Fiona Wood [commenting on the beating and bullying]:  “Some people just don’t understand the issue and how society can turn against the individual.”

Sadly, this type of ending is not uncommon and happens everyday — even in seemingly progressive countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. A reality check like this from time to time will ensure that the suicide problem continues to be worked on and not swept away out of sight.

A tribute to Natasha is here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/welshflickrcymru/discuss/72157629887893530/

Oxford University enters the Transgender Age

Models demonstrate Oxford’s uniform or sub fusc

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A British academic bastillion, Oxford University, has caved on their strict dress policy and adopted rules allowing transgender student to wear the ceremonial clothing of the gender they present in. These new rules go into effect next week.

Oxford has a long tradition of requiring students taking exams to wear gender-specific uniforms or sub fuscs. This dress code is also followed during formal occasions at the university.

However, concerns of the rules being unfair to trans students, especially with the harsh punishment that follows wearing the wrong attire, prompted the university to change the policy. It was a student LGBTQ organization that pushed for the change.

Oxford’s LGBTQ Society’s Jess Pumphrey: “In future there will be no need for transgender students to cross-dress to avoid being confronted by invigilators or disciplined during their exam.”

Oxford University is the second oldest university in the world and many of its graduates over the years went on to become major world leaders, including most recently, former President Bill Clinton. Forty seven eventual Nobel Prize winners were either students or taught at Oxford.

Let’s welcome Oxford University to the 21st century — the Transgender Age, finally!

Transgender student banned, then later unbanned after showing headmaster UK’s Equality Act

Ashlyn Parram (Photo: SWNS.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Trans student Ashlyn Parram is only 16 years-old, but she’s one up on her teachers at UK’s Giles Academy in Boston, Lincolnshire when it comes to knowing the law on sex discrimination.

After Parram showed up for a school exam she was told by a teacher that she needed to leave and change into a boy’s school uniform. Parram then reportedly printed out a copy of  the UK’s Equality Act and showed it to the school’s headmaster who reversed the teacher’s decision and allowed Parram to return and take the exam.

Reputable sources about this incident is scarce at this writing and I’m not going to rely on the sources I found for details beyond this. If you’re curious, you can read one of the articles below — but be forewarned — the gender IDs and pronouns usage in this article may leave you a bit upset!

UK ad watchdog bans “spot the stallions from the mares” TV commercial

Paddy Power “Spot the stallions from the mares” commercial

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “Spot the stallions from the mares”? Yes, it is what you think. A television commercial which prompted viewers to spot transgender women in a crowd was banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority. The spot was created for Paddy Power, an Irish bookmaker.

Complaints, along with input from social media and the Kent Transgender Forum likely compelled the ASA to take action, although they downplayed social media’s role.

From the ASA: “The suggestion that trans people could be segregated into the gender stereotypes ‘stallions’ and ‘mares’ as part of a guessing game, trivialised a complex and difficult issue and objectified them in a way that was likely to cause them serious offence. . .”

Paddy Power is still running the ad in places where the ASA has no authority, such as on YouTube. Paddy Power claims they consulted with a trans organization prior to running the ad but there are some disputes over the facts.

This incident brings to mind an another controversial TV ad from Australia (Libra tampon) I wrote about earlier this year:  http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/fallout-from-libra-drag-queen-or-trans-woman-tampon-ad-continues/

Chloe Sevigny portrays a transgender contract killer in UK’s “Hit & Miss” TV series

Chloe Sevigny, a trans hit woman in “Hit & Miss”

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Exploitation? Maybe. But I’m willing to give this series a shot because Sevigny portrays a pre-op trans woman taking hormones. She’s fitted with prosthetic penis to bring a bit of realism to the character and themes in the series include sexual identity and family — she has a son in the series.

But she’s also a hit woman. Television is a tough venue – you’ve got to have a hook if it’s to sell. If done right, I’d say we’ve a chance to humanize trans people for the masses. By all accounts, the trans character is cool and human. Sevigny will certainly be a great draw who, according to some reports, researched the role before filming began.

Hit & Miss is a six-part series scheduled to air this month in the UK, if my information is correct, on Sky Atlantic.
