Jenna Talackova to give TV audiences a peek into her transgender life

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — If you guessed “reality show”, you guessed right. But wait, before you say anything, consider this: the viewers of reality shows are just the kind of people who are in need of the awareness Talackova can expertly serve up. Indeed, they’ll lap it right up.

Talackova already has demonstrated her ability to turn her attention from the international media into a positive spin on all things transgender. After the pageant ended, she undertook a couple of high-profile events to promote equality. She has done a great job thus far and I don’t fault her for now wanting to make a few bucks off her fame. She’s likely to continue to this track record of positive transgender PR in whatever she does.

There’s no guarantee though that the reality TV show will actually happen. As someone in the business, I can tell you these things fall apart more often than not. If not this show, something else will no doubt surface for her, as her success story is the kind of thing many producers would kill to get her on board their projects, if not create one specifically for her.

Ad boycott against ‘Degrassi’ and Chaz Bono a badge of honor

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — While a boycott call for a TV show with trans advocate Chaz Bono guest starring may be frustrating for him, I suggest that in this instance, Bono just consider it a badge of honor.

Very few members of anti-trans organization Florida Family Association (FFA) are likely to be a target of advertisers of “Degrassi” and it’s unlikely the FFA can reach people other than those who share the same so-called “family values” nonsense. Indeed, what I see here is FFA trying to capitalize on Bono’s name to draw attention to themselves and their misguided causes and hopefully raise a few bucks along the way.

Bono just being himself and being part of the show brings more good will and positive attention to transgender people than what can be undone by anti-trans organizations like the FFA.

But Bono is right about one thing — the road to trans equality is a slog.

Bono on the call for a boycott: “It’s frustrating, I mean, it’s frustrating that we have to slog along. That we can’t just get to the end point where we’re going to be. But you can look at any group that has been held down in any way or had prejudice against them. And it changes. You know, it just slowly changes over time.”

Chaz Bono will appear as himself in a trans-themed episode of “Degrassi” this fall.

Transgender actress Laverne Cox says “game changed forever for trans folk in the media”

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — After watching trans-themed Becoming Chaz and Gun Hill Road at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, trans actress Laverne Cox says the game has changed for us. Transgender visibility had a groundbreaking year, especially for trans actors/actresses.

Laverne Cox wrote: In an article about transgender performers in the December 8-14, 2011 issue of Backstage, Simi Horwitz writes, “Casting director Sig De Miguel … looks forward to the time when a character’s transgender status is incidental to the script and an actor’s trans identity is irrelevant to casting. ‘You may be born male, but you’re a woman now,’ De Miguel says.” De Miguel represents a growing number of industry professionals who are open to casting trans actors in roles that aren’t necessarily written as trans.

As a transgender actress myself, I know the difficulties we face. There seems to be more opportunities for us to be exploited than appreciated for our acting abilities. It’s nice to know that things may be changing.

Survey says: Trans woman on Jeopardy! Is this true?

Sorry, your answer must in the form of a question.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — One of my new Facebook friends is saying that her friend said (I know, friend of a friend) that a trans woman appeared on Jeopardy today (Oct. 24, 2012). Anybody know anything about this? My check of the “usual sources” came up with zip, and a meeting in an underground parking garage with Deep Throat was unproductive. So, if anyone saw the show, or better yet has a link to that information, I’ll update everyone.
