D.C. cop who fired at trans people in car while standing on hood sentenced to time served

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — I’ve been following this story since the incident first occurred. Kenneth Furr, a Washington DC police officer who was convicted of assault last October in a bizarre incident which found him standing on the hood of a car firing though the windshield at the trans occupants of the car, was recently sentenced.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Russell Canan sentenced Furr to time served, but he does face a number of probation conditions and is currently out of jail. Furr has apparently been suspended for a while now, and the DC police say there is a process for firing cops with felonies, but didn’t comment further.

My previous comments that he was no longer a DC cop may have been premature. Apparently Furr was just suspended from the force pending a final court decision.

I’m not so sure much justice was served here, but on the other hand no one was killed and we have a convicted cop from an area where trans people have been getting the short end of the justice stick.

Trans leader has no confidence in DC Metro Police’s ability to keep trans people safe

The D.C. Trans Coalition’s Jason Terry told the Washington D.C. Council during a hearing that the Metropolitan Police Department and it’s Chief Cathy Lanier, has “abdicated its responsibility to keep trans people in the District of Columbia safe.”

Council member Phil Mendelson led this hearing following news that the U.S. Justice Department recently began investigating the city’s bias against trans people and a ‘low closure rate’ on crimes against them.

Terry on Chief Lanier: “Rather than attempt to solve crimes, or to advocate for safer conditions for trans people, Chief Lanier simply says it is on us not to get killed,”

Terry noted that the recent murder of Deoni Jones was the first instance of a trans murder to be solved in a decade — there are seven unsolved cold cases on the books. He also cited the dubious behavior of off-duty DC cops towards trans people.

Finally — DC cop indicted in August shooting of transgender woman

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — This was the off-duty cop who stood on the hood of a trans woman’s occupied car and fired five shots through the windshield. I first wrote about his last August right after it happened — details then were sketchy but it was clear DC Metropolitan Police Officer Kenneth Furr wounded one of the passengers inside car.

A grand jury indicted him March 7th, on nine counts, including numerous assault charges and solicitation. These charges add up to a possible 30-year jail term.

Apparently Furr, who was drunk at the time, attempted to solicit sex from a trans woman in a store which eventually resulted in a confrontation when she refused his advances and her friend entered the conversation. After the group was forced outside by a security guard, Furr brandished a gun upon entering his car then drove off. The other party met up with some friends and left in another car. A while later, these cars collided, which was followed by Furr jumping on the hood of the other car and firing five shots, supposedly yelling: “I’m a kill all of you.”

Furr has a less than stellar history with the DC police and is scheduled to appear in court Friday March 9th. Furr’s attorney said previously that Furr was “defending himself.”
