Canada tries again with trans rights bill, Arizona goes off deep end

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Perhaps prompted by the Jenna Talackona-Miss Universe saga, Canada’s Parliament sped up a trans rights bill that was introduced last year with a second reading last week. The bill will add trans people to the Canadian Human Rights Act and make violence against them a hate crime. This is Canada’s fourth attempt at enacting a trans civil rights law.

The Arizona legislature this week sent three dubious bills to Gov. Jan Brewer to sign, one of which says that pregnancies begin 2 weeks before conception (date of a woman’s last period). Not only this makes a mockery of a woman’s biology, it is also a legal Pandora’s Box that will make a beeline to the U.S. Supreme Court. Another bill requires that schools teach kids that for unwanted pregnancy, adoption and birth is the most acceptable outcome. A third bill prevents doctors from being sued if they don’t tell parents something about the fetus that might cause them to terminate the pregnancy.

I won’t begin to get into this shameless runaround of a woman’s right to make choices. But I will once again stress that it is the President of the United States who appoints justices to the U.S. Supreme Court – the final arbitrator of nutty laws like these. Please vote accordingly.

Alright, who spilled the Tea and ruined the Party?

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A quick wrap up while the tea gets cleaned up:

1) Transphobic Michigan State Rep. Paul Scott was recalled. In addition to making lives miserable for trans people, he was a union buster of the highest order.

2) Stupidity defeated in Mississippi. The dilemma of how to issue Social Security numbers to citizen fetuses has been adverted. The “personhood amendment” still got quite a few votes though on its way to defeat.

3) Ohio voters tell Gov. John Kashich to shove his anti-union legislation where the sun don’t shine. The law passed the state assembly but 1.3 million signatures from angry Ohioans put it on the ballot. The nation now looks at Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker who will be fighting a recall effort for his actions in the creation of anti-union legislation in Wisconsin.

4) Powerful GOP Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce, the force behind the hardline crackdown on illegal immigrants was recalled in a spectacular fashion! Gov. Jan Brewer is likely permanently damaged. What were they thinking anyway? Arizona is a state with a large hispanic population. Can’t any of the Republicans do math? Now they need to get that legal bigotry law off the books.

5) A lesbian running for city council in Missoula, Montana wins. Caitlin Copple defeated an incumbent who opposed a LGBT non-discrimination ordinance.

6) Iowa Democrat Liz Mathis won her state Senate race allowing Democrats to prevent Republicans from repealing the state’s gay marriage legislation.
