Transgender fashion/art magazine does homage to Michelle Obama

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — There’s no doubt this photo shoot for Candy magazine will trigger heated debates in a number of different venues.  But that is part of what art is — pushing and exploring boundaries. I, for one, am glad to see this sort of homage to our First Lady presented this way.

I don’t know what Michelle Obama thinks of this, however as a public figure, it technically doesn’t matter. That aside, I do think she’s okay with being part of the awareness transgender people in this manner.

The magazine publisher, Luis Venegas, says they’re a transgender/androgyny “style magazine about fashion, art, culture, make-up, glamour, icons, amazing transformations and fun.”

For the magazine’s fifth issue, trans model Connie Fleming portrays Michelle on the cover. Earlier Candy issues featured Andrej Pejic, James Franco, and Chloe Sevigny in drag. I’m curious who will be featured next.

Enjoy the photos. I dug up one featuring James Franco for good measure.

BTW, I noticed there is more than one “Candy” magazine — another appears to be a teen magazine, so for those of you headed to Google, be advised, lest you get confused!

Photographer Bettina Rheims’ androgyne/transgender portraits

Photo: Bettina Rheims

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — I’m a big fan of androgyne portraits. There’s just something about this type of photography that often leaves people questioning their “norms.” If they’re left confused and unsure after viewing such things then perhaps they, and society as a whole, ought not make judgements based on gender at all.

The “Gender Studies” exhibition by Bettina Rheims is a portrait series of people that evade categorization of being male or female. While this particular show is in Berlin, running now through Dec. 1st, (Camera Work, Kantstraße 149, 10623 Berlin – Germany) there are a bunch of transgender/androgyne-themed photos at the links below and the photographer’s home page that is worth a look-see!

“Kelli Connell: Double Life” – striking photographs by a lesbian artist

"Kelli Connell: Double Life" (photo: kelliconnell.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The above titled monograph by Kelli Connell is a technical marvel — the same female model is paired up in every photograph, unleashing striking emotions on gender, relationships, and where we’re at as a society.

Ms. Connell usage of photoshop is completely transparent and one doesn’t immediately realize the two people in the photos are in fact, the same person. Ms. Connell’s work has been widely exhibited. Visit her website to see more of these photos — you’ll be in for a treat: http://kelliconnell.com/home.html

Transgender artists Zackary Drucker and Amos Mac’s exhibit: Home is Where the Heart is.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — My eye caught a couple of cool photos from this duo — both are trans artists. Drucker is a photographer and a video/performance artist, while Mac is the publisher of “Original Plumbing”. Their exhibit is running until Jan 22, at the Luis de Jesus Gallery, in Culver City, California. It might be something worthwhile to check out if you’re in that area.

A review of the exhibit is here: Art review: Zackary Drucker, Amos Mac at Luis de Jesus Gallery – latimes.com.

LadyFace // ManBody — a trans/gender-bending art project like no other.

Heather Cassils

Heather Cassils

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — This is a provactive art project that even I don’t quite fully grasp. Yet, I urge you to check out the video and photos.  The artist is a (born female) trans person who has yet decided whether to take hormones or have SRS. Her work challenges society’s perception of gender and who we are inside our bodies. I think its cool when trans artists force society to rethink the labels they’ve foisted on us!

“Heather Cassils one of those people, a true punk with the kind of fearlessness that most biological men wish they were born with.” (From the Huffington Post)

Watch the video here, especially the part between 1:55 to 2:30:

See Heather Cassils’s new work, come to the exhibition: Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) presents Los Angeles Goes Live: Performance Art in Southern California 1970-1983, on view now until Jan. 29, 2012.

Check out Heather Cassils and Robin Black’s collaborative fine art zine LADY FACE//MAN BODY. The zine features powerful pin-ups for a shifting cultural landscape.
