Trans musician Laura Jane Grace got boost during transition from idol Joan Jett

JoanJettlaurajanegrace300xTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — During the difficult days of rock group Against Me!’s lead singer’s transition, Laura Jane Grace received a strong boost from rocker Joan Jett.

Laura Jane Grace writes for Cosmopolitan: “One of the first people I received a letter of support from after coming out was Joan Jett, who I knew a little from doing the Warped Tour together in 2006. Joan is a hero of mine and a rock-and-roll pioneer. When she started out, the rock scene was predominantly male. She defied gender stereotypes all on her own. My daughter, Evelyn, is also a huge Joan Jett fan. She asks for Joan’s records to be played and adores her Joan Jett Barbie doll. Against Me! went through New York City on tour with The Cult in June, and I asked Joan if she’d sing a song with us. She and her band had covered The Replacements’ “Androgynous” onstage, and The Replacements are one of my all-time favorite bands. Joan was into the idea! Singing together onstage, I felt so confident and grateful for her support. Back on the tour bus after the show, I watched, astonished, as Joan Jett leaned down and tucked an excited Evelyn, who was supposed to be asleep, into bed.”

———-

For those of you who were wondering, Joan Jett is an ally of trans people and an idol of mine.

Progressive Oregon high school prevents trans bathroom angst; newspaper runs trans positive story on front page

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — After an ugly week for trans people in the news, particularly, in newspapers, imagine my surprise when I picked up from my doorstep our local paper and seeing a trans positive story on the front page — we’re not talking about a small tombstone piece, but real estate approaching half of the front page with a photo above the fold.

The story in The Oregonian: Portland’s Grant High School creates unisex restrooms for transgender students to use after school administrators became concerned about their safety and needs.

Yes, it’s simple as that. $500 to change some locks. Potential problem fixed. Next issue please.

Why can’t other schools be as progressive as the Portland Public Schools? Need a model? Here’s one.

Thumbs up to the school counselors, administrators, Portland’s TransActive and anyone else that had a hand in this.

As for The Oregonian, whoa, what can I say? Pronoun usage, terminology, facts — you got most everything right. Here’s another model for mainstream reporting on trans people and trans issues that others ought to follow. (The Daily Mail, et. al., I’m looking at you.)

Plug pulled on “Just Out” magazine a second time — transgender column “In Transit” ends

"Just Out" logos throughout the years

“Just Out” logos throughout the years

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Portland, Oregon’s long running LGBT magazine Just Out has ceased publication a second time. The February, 2013 edition was the final issue.

Publishers Jonathan Kipp and Eddie Glenn pulled the plug after 9 issues when it became apparent that advertising revenue was not going to reach the level needed to make it a viable operation.

Kipp and Glenn bought the magazine shortly after previous owner Marty Davis shut it down a year ago. It was hoped that a makeover would keep the magazine in print, but economic factors did not allow this to happen.

Yours truly had a monthly column in the publication which I wrote about transgender topics with a local slant. I’d like to thank Kipp and Glenn for that opportunity. Of course, my writings will continue to appear in The Guerrilla Angel Report, The Huffington Post, Wipe Out Transphobia and the numerous other media outlets that republish my work.

I am not privy to information whether the magazine will someday resurface. My guess is as good as yours.

Articles I wrote for Just Out: In Transit.

Actor-comedian Eddie Izzard says being transgender is a gift

Eddie Izzard asks: Do you have a flag?

Eddie Izzard asks: Do you have a flag?

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — It was a transgender lawyer that first turned Eddie Izzard onto the ‘being trans is a gift’ view shortly after Izzard first came out.   Since then, Izzard has carried this positive way of looking at it, including, and perhaps especially, during his performances.

In an interview with The Advocate, Izzard briefly talks about being transgender. Izzard says: “If you are an alternative sexuality, you have to look at it as a gift or otherwise it’s going to grind you down. In the end, I’m a much more positive person for having come out.

For parents of trans kids, Izzard says: Just be friendly, supportive, and be positive. Don’t just go, “Oh my God!”

Most of the interview, however, involves other topics, including religion and the use of it in performances, and a recent lifetime humanist achievement award bestowed on Izzard.

I previously wrote about Izzard here: http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/comedian-eddie-izzard-plans-to-run-for-office-to-help-the-trans-community/

If you have not seen Izzard’s act, I highly recommend the DVD: Dress to Kill. Used copies are going for around $3 dollars (USD). You’ll thank me later. http://www.amazon.com/Eddie-Izzard-Dress-Kill/dp/B00003CWOU

Gender Identity Clinic for trans kids open in Chicago hospital

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Medical and social support services for trans kids under 13 of age are now available at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Services for trans kids similar to this are relatively rare — there are only a few such locations in the entire country.

According to a report in the Chicago Examiner, funding for the clinic came from Lurie and the Tawani Foundation and an official opening is set to occur later this year.

Transgender people are the most marginalized group of people in the United States — and the group with the highest suicide attempt rate — reaching out to trans kids is an effective way to reverse these conditions. Trans photographer to exhibit at Brandeis University; seeks transgender participants

(Photo: Facebook)

Yishay Garbasz (Photo: Facebook)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Trans woman Yishay Garbasz, whose photographs has exhibited around the world, is coming to Boston in April for a month-long residency at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center. Her hope that her time there ‘will culminate in a multimedia exhibition of photographs, video and text celebrating Jewish women who identify as transgender.’

An Israeli now based in Berlin, Garbasz has previously exhibited the transformation of her body from male to female via series of weekly photographs which is also available in a “flip book.” She’s also won a prize for another books of photos tracing her Jewish mother’s path to freedom during World War 2.

Garbasz is seeking transgender participants for her current project. If you are going to be in Boston or NYC during April and want to be part of the project, check this out:

“Coming Home: Portraits of Jewish Women” is a multimedia art project about Jewishness, transgender, and love. The project will present gender also beyond the standard male/female binary and will look at the intersection between Jewishness and gender in women. I am looking for participants for the project in Boston and NYC.

“As an artist and a woman with a transgender history, I am looking for role models and other trans women to learn from. I am taking pictures of Jewish women who are also transgender and gender non-conforming. Two of my concerns with the project are inclusivity and visibility. In order not to “other” my subjects, I would like to include family members and/or partner(s) in the photographs. In this way, I will depict the web of connections each person has rather than isolating individuals, thereby giving visibility without creating spectacle.

I am looking for participants for the project who are willing to be photographed and have their photographs exhibited in an art gallery. Please contact me if you are interested, and please pass this along to other women that might be interested.

I will be taking pictures during the first 2-3 weeks of April in/around Boston but can also travel to New York City for a few days to take pictures. I have exhibited my work around the world, and you can learn more about my artwork at www.yishay.com

Trans-Mayor

(Photo: Just Out)

(Photo: Just Out)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [I wrote this for Just Out.] On Election Day 2012, a transgender Oregonian drew national attention for the second time by winning a fifth term as Mayor of Silverton, Oregon. Stu Rasmussen first drew media attention in 2008 by being the first transgender person elected mayor in the United States.

[Read the entire article on the Just Out site here: http://www.justout.com/columns/voices/in-transit/trans-mayor/ ]

Stu was born and grew up in Silverton. She was hired by Tektronics right out of college, eventually ending up as a staff engineer for the Television Products Division. Later, she started a cable television company with a partner bringing service into Silverton and Mt. Angel. After a while she sold that company and moved on to a number of other engineering ventures as well as running the Palace Theatre in Silverton. She also dabbled in local politics and along the way changed her gender and decided to shoot for the mayor’s chair after serving three 4-year terms on the city council. Although national media came to town following her victory, Stu says it was “no big deal” in Silverton.

A visit to Stu Rasmussen’s campaign website reveals that this no ordinary trans woman. The site states: “If you just stumbled on this site you may be asking yourself ‘Is this guy for real?’ or ‘Is that really a guy?’” No beating around the bush here.

Stu kept her first name after she changed gender. Pronoun references to Stu in the local media appear to use both forms. This had me wondering a bit so I checked in with Stu and asked her about this and a couple of other things.

Just Out: Any pronoun preference?

Stu Rasmussen: I avoid ‘pronoun angst’ by personally not caring whether I’m referred to in male or female terms. I grew up here [Silverton] as a guy and have transitioned to something ‘in-between’ where either is correct – so either pronoun works fine.

JO: Has being trans presented opportunities for you (and for the city of Silverton) you might not have had otherwise?

Stu: The publicity after the 2008 election has resulted in a small bump in tourism — we should probably have capitalized on it early on but the Chamber of Commerce was in the other political camp. That may change.

JO: How do you view Portland as Mayor of Silverton?

Stu: I like Portland (it’s really ‘a small town with a lot of people’) and visit at least once a week just so I can appreciate what we have here when I return. I describe Silverton as ‘40 miles and 40 years’ from Portland. Our downtown is a time capsule of when I grew up in the 50s and 60s and is a great spot for day trips from the Portland area. A weekend spent at the Oregon Garden Resort here and wandering in Silverton’s business district is a great opportunity to re-charge one’s personal batteries.

JO: Any advice for Portland’s next mayor?

Stu: Avoid trysting with a teenager.

JO: People who know you comment about what a great guy you are. These comments are made by people who live, lived or just drove through Silverton. Most politicians would love this kind of feedback. What’s your secret?

Stu: I’m just being ‘me’.

UK’s Telegraph newspaper publishes yanked Julie Burchill transgender hate piece

Toby Young of the UK's Telegraph (Photo: socialregister.co.uk)

Toby Young of the UK’s Telegraph (Photo: socialregister.co.uk)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — In the midst of this ongoing explosion in the transgender community over the Julie Burchill trans-hate piece that was pulled from the UK’s The Observer newspaper, another UK paper, the Telegraph, has recently republished it on their website.

The Telegraph‘s Toby Young argued that The Observer’s actions amounted to censorship. He stated that he was a friend of Burchill and that she had given him permission to republish it as part of an article for his paper.

————–

It appears clear to me that ad hominem attacks like Burchill’s article, especially when used against a marginalized group of people, have no place in entities other than those that exploit to pad their pocketbooks. This appears pretty much what the Telegraph is doing. Young could have still made his argument without republishing the piece, but now, any point he had is lost.

Likewise, Burchill could have easily made her arguments without using ad hominem comments to engage a public discourse on something that concerned her, however, by doing a hate piece, she invalidated any point she was trying to make.

Telegraph: Thumbs down.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Oregon’s Laura Calvo, a Democrat Party activist and former sheriff deputy is the first transgender person elected to Democratic National Committee. Another trans woman, AnmBarbra Casbar Siperstein, the first one to serve on the committee, was appointed.

Democratic Party of Oregon’s Meredith Wood Smith: “Everyone who’s worked with Laura Calvo knows what I know – she’s a superstar. We couldn’t be prouder to have her represent the Democratic Party of Oregon as a member of the Democratic National Committee.”

There is very little information beyond this, however, I did find a picture of her for this piece.

While trans model Andrej Pejic rocks high fashion world, a bigger story lies under the surface

Andrej Pejic (Photo: andrejpejicmodel.com)

Andrej Pejic (Photo: andrejpejicmodel.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Transgender model Andrej Pejic is being reported as the first transgender model on the cover of a high fashion magazine. Of course, with all the sources being tabloids, we’ll take this with a grain of salt as there may have been others.

However, Pejic is on the cover of the most recent issue of Elle Magazine, Serbia. This in itself is a major accomplishment for any trans person, worthy of recognition — especially how they’ll bring positive PR to the trans community. Like beauty contestant Jenna Talackova, Pejic has the potential to bring about changes in the way society thinks about us in the way we couldn’t possibly pay to have done.

While I’m leaving the details of Pejic’s magazine spread to the fashion magazine and tabloids, I am going to point out the even bigger story here: Pejic is blurring the difference between gender to the point where society’s norms about gender are shattered further. Pejic appears as either male or female (or neither, for that matter) depending on the needs of the client. Indeed, in the Elle spread, Pejic poses both as a male and a female. This certainly will give many a reader pause on their thinking of all things gender. The seeds have been planted. One day, gender won’t matter.

While we’re fighting a slow uphill battle to show the fallacy of two gender thinking with medical professionals, politicians and in the courts, Pejic and others having high public attention are positioned to win the hearts and minds of many in society who may not be persuaded otherwise.

While I’m not sure where the tipping point is where trans equality becomes an unstoppable force, but we ought to milk every opportunity to get there sooner by embracing things some may find distasteful — like high fashion and beauty pageants.

Jenna Talackova to give TV audiences a peek into her transgender life

Jenna Talackova (Photo: Gerry Kharman, Vancouver Sun)

Jenna Talackova (Photos: Gerry Kahrman, Vancouver Sun)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — If you guessed “reality show”, you guessed right. But wait, before you say anything, consider this: the viewers of reality shows are just the kind of people who are in need of the awareness Talackova can expertly serve up. Indeed, they’ll lap it right up.

Talackova already has demonstrated her ability to turn her attention from the international media into a positive spin on all things transgender. After the pageant ended, she undertook a couple of high-profile events to promote equality. She has done a great job thus far and I don’t fault her for now wanting to make a few bucks off her fame. She’s likely to continue to this track record of positive transgender PR in whatever she does.

There’s no guarantee though that the reality TV show will actually happen. As someone in the business, I can tell you these things fall apart more often than not. If not this show, something else will no doubt surface for her, as her success story is the kind of thing many producers would kill to get her on board their projects, if not create one specifically for her.

Stay tuned!

Transgender fashion/art magazine does homage to Michelle Obama

(Photo: Candy magazine)

(Photo: Candy magazine)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — There’s no doubt this photo shoot for Candy magazine will trigger heated debates in a number of different venues.  But that is part of what art is — pushing and exploring boundaries. I, for one, am glad to see this sort of homage to our First Lady presented this way.

I don’t know what Michelle Obama thinks of this, however as a public figure, it technically doesn’t matter. That aside, I do think she’s okay with being part of the awareness transgender people in this manner.

The magazine publisher, Luis Venegas, says they’re a transgender/androgyny “style magazine about fashion, art, culture, make-up, glamour, icons, amazing transformations and fun.”

For the magazine’s fifth issue, trans model Connie Fleming portrays Michelle on the cover. Earlier Candy issues featured Andrej Pejic, James Franco, and Chloe Sevigny in drag. I’m curious who will be featured next.

Enjoy the photos. I dug up one featuring James Franco for good measure.

BTW, I noticed there is more than one “Candy” magazine — another appears to be a teen magazine, so for those of you headed to Google, be advised, lest you get confused!

Miss Universe pageant generates loads of positive PR for trans people in 2012

Trans woman Jenna Talackova open doors, cis ally Culpo wins title, anti-trans Sheena Monnin quits pageant

Trans woman Jenna Talackova open doors, trans ally Olivia Culpo wins title, anti-trans Sheena Monnin quits pageant

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Transgender people went 3 for 3 in the positive PR department on the Miss Universe beauty pageant circuit in 2012.

Earlier this year Canadian trans woman Jenna Talackova pioneered the acceptance of transgender contestants in that pageant and last week, a cis-contestant who previously voiced her support of transgender participation back in June, Olivia Culpo, was crowned Miss Universe.

Here’s what Culpo, then Miss Rhode Island, said during the Miss USA pageant in response to this question: Would it be fair if a transgender woman won the Miss USA title?:  “I do think it would be fair…  there are so many people who have a need to change for a happier life. I do accept that because I believe it’s a free country.”

Culpo, a Boston University sophomore, went on to win the Miss USA title in June and the Miss Universe title last week.

Contrast that from what Carrie Prejean, Miss California (2009) USA, said back in the 2009 pageant: “I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.”

Also. there’s this third positive bit of news from the Miss Universe pageant that ought to bring a smile to many trans people’s faces. Last week, the Miss Universe organization won a lawsuit against Sheena Monnin, former Miss Pennsylvania USA, who quit in the middle of the pageant, for, among other things, allowing transgender contestants.

This statement was reportedly sent by Monnin to the pageant officials: “I refuse to be part of a pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to compete in it. This goes against ever (sic) moral fiber of my being.”

I’m not so sure if they’ll be able to collect the $5 million they’re asking for, but I like the idea that hate can be expensive.

Justice for trans woman’s rough airport experience becomes undone by lack of facts shared on social media

AirportTHE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — This is a tough topic to tackle. What ought to be a no brainer decision for a reporter becomes a moral dilemma because the victim involved also had a hand in the spreading of misinformation on the internet.

Of course, anyone experiencing what appears at first glance to be mistreatment by law enforcement officers may make emotional and not entirely correct statements at first. However, even after the passage of time, the victim in this incident did not disclose facts nor correct errors in her follow-up posts on social media. Nor did she set the record completely straight during or after being interviewed by a LGBT publication. As a result, neither I or other trans advocates can make completely favorable comments on her behalf.

Fortunately for the victim, there was a recourse for her to report her mistreatment and she has stated she has done so. So hopefully this matter comes to a satisfactory conclusion for her.

I’m not using the victim’s name because this story is not about her personally, but rather, focused on the importance of stating only the facts. Simply put: if you don’t know, don’t guess! Us trans people do not need to create our own misinformation and spread it on the internet! We already have our hands full with the misinformation society has regarding us.

As an aside, there are times when one ought to speak to a lawyer before making any public statement, but in this case, the victim went ahead, and continued to make, public statements including talking to the media.

This is a summary of the events that unfolded. The story first broke on social media by a friend of the victim:

“. . . Monday, December 10th, 2012, my good friend [victim] was at [airport of a major U.S. city] on board her flight to [another major U.S. city] when the police boarded the aircraft, handcuffed and arrested her. They held her for a few hours telling her she had no rights and demanded why she was “Transgender”. . . .” (this story was shared on social media at least 50 times, likely in the hundreds.)

There was no mention of which airline, flight number and other key details. Nevertheless, over the next several days I searched the net for additional information, anything that would confirm this story, including the city’s police arrest database which listed people arrested at the airport. Her name was never on the list each time I checked it.

As we eventually found out, she was never arrested, nor did that city’s police officers board the aircraft or handcuffed her in the aircraft.

Later, the victim posted this on her social media page that began with [this post has since been deleted from her social media page and I thus cannot confirm the date]:

“Arrested in [city] . . .”

Again, this turned out to be a false statement, this time stated by the victim.

Meanwhile on social media, people shredded that city’s police department, the TSA, airport authorities — which ever law enforcement agency happened to be the favored target of that particular thread. Again, we did not know at the time which, if any, of these authorities “arrested” her.

Likewise, people unloaded on Delta, Southwest Airlines, a number of smaller regional carriers that partners with the major airlines. Which one was the actual airline, if any of these, at all? We don’t know. We still don’t know.

On Dec 12th, another post from the victim on her social media page:

“. . . . This is going to be an overwhelming day . . . contacting lawyers and commissions, the news media, and in general just keeping it all together. . . . This arrest in [city] . . .”

She again repeats her earlier false statement, but mentions she’ll be talking to the media, but does not mention which airline nor correct any of the misinformation being posted on social media.

On Dec. 13th, a story came out in a LGBT publication and this is the gist of the whole incident:

“Shortly after she boarded the plane, [victim] said a flight attendant walked her off the plane to a group of [city] police officers, who handcuffed her and detained her for public drunkenness for two hours.”

It was the, still unnamed, airline that removed her off plane. Not the city police, nor the TSA or airport authorities. She wasn’t handcuffed on the plane either.

Later in the article, there is a quote from a detective with the city police:

“If a pilot feels there’s a safety issue with a person on a plane, that person is removed. . . .”

——–

Well, there you have it. Did the airline go overboard here? Perhaps. Did we go into a gossip feeding frenzy spreading misinformation on the internet? Certainly.

A sampling of literally thousands of comments posted on social media:

Sue the police and TSA and the airline and the airport authority.

That is total BS!! The TSA is a joke.

I won’t fly as long as the TSA has the power they do. They are simply thugs

 the TSA and gestapo-like tactics

Southwest Airlines

I thought I had read it was a Delta flight.

That’s why I never fly Southworst!!!!

It was Delta Connection.

chances are it was Southwest Airlines

It was Express Jet Airlines
