UK woman cited by police for transphobic abuse of trans woman, trend developing

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Halstead (UK) Police cited an apparent neighbor for transphobic abuse following a hate crime investigation into a claim made by a trans woman.

On April 22, a trans woman named Maddie reported to the police that she was a victim of transphobic abuse by a woman whose apparent intention was to drive her out of her home. The police did investigate and last week, handed the woman a warning.

The source for this was woefully short in details. However, the outcome was positive for the trans woman. Although the abuser only received a warning, we’re seeing a subtle trend of trans people reporting their abusive neighbors and getting positive results.

Escaped Colombian convict supposedly caught — is this transgender news? If so, how do we cover it?

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — In the first place, all the reports in English (at this writing) sources a British tabloid which is a pretty big red flag right there — not one word of the report can be considered as factual, however, looking at reports translated from other languages, although some appear to be tabloids as well, it appears that an escaped Colombian drug lord may have had at least partial sex reassignment surgery since her escape from prison. When caught, she used the name Rosalinda.

Normally, I would not even cover a crime-by-a-trans-person story, however, in this case, we have to consider the possibility that someone may have made a surgical change to their appearance to evade capture.

However, to be clear, at this point, we don’t know for a fact there was sex reassignment surgery. If there was, we don’t know for a fact if it was done to evade capture. There enough reasonable doubt here until more facts surfaces.

Here’s my dilemma — do I disclose Rosalinda’s birth name or give her the benefit of the doubt? Another dilemma, is there such a thing as a fraudulent sex change? If so, how do we approach reporting on this? Most especially, what is the pronoun protocol for this?

The crimes for which the escaped Colombian drug criminal was convicted of were pretty brutal — 60 years for torturing kidnap victims — should this factor in the disclosure of previous names/gender?

Rosauer’s grocery store boots trans woman after she uses women’s bathroom

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A Lewison, Idaho Rosauer’s location booted Ally Robledo after she used the women’s room at the store. Rosauer’s is a grocery chain based out of Spokane, Washington.

Captain Roger Lanier of the Lewiston Police: “A male subject who was using the female restroom, and that made some women customers uncomfortable because of the appearance that a male was using their restroom . . . The store employees didn’t want any further problems, and they chose to exercise their right to trespass this individual from the business. Anyone who owns or controls their property can make that decision.”

The Transgender Law Center’s Ilona Turner: “Transgender people have the same needs and deserve the same access to public stores and facilities as others without discrimination based on who they are. They just need to go to the bathroom like everyone else.”

Robledo was given a no tresspass order. Rosauer’s corporation office had no comment.

DC transgender org uses Freedom of Info Act to uncover possible DC police hate crimes review bias

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — An upcoming independent and bias-free review of Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police Department’s handling of hate crimes may not be so independent after all.

The DC Trans Coalition uncovered compelling evidence through the use of the Freedom of Information Act that the review may favor the police department.  The organization disclosed that email correspondences between a person close to the inquiry, David Friedman, and Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier suggest a friendship level where impartiality may be unlikely.

The Washington Blade, however, is reporting that both Lanier and the Anti-Defamation League’s Friedman, are denying the claims being made by the DCTC, arguing that a final report has not been submitted.

DC judge slams suspect, DA on transgender attack case

Washington D.C. Superior Court Judge Rhonda Reid Winston, apparently fed up with the behavior of the accused attacker of an unnamed trans woman and the DA’s apparent withholding of evidence, laid down the law on both of them.

Winston ordered Ahmad Robinson, accused in August on an attack on a DC trans woman and apparently out of jail awaiting trial, to comply with the release terms. Robinson has a history of not following release conditions and this reprimand may be his final chance to avoid even harsher terms.

Winston also told the government be more forthcoming with evidence in the discovery phase with the defense team and to get it done by March 6th. The DA has already succeeded in getting a postponement of the trial and it is now scheduled for March 27.

The victim spotted and positively ID’d Robinson an hour after reporting the assault to the DC police.

This case has some in the DC trans community angry that Robinson was released from jail in the first place, and even more so now after he failed to comply with many of the conditions set for his release. The delay with release of evidence has some wondering about the strength of the case against Robinson.

D.C. cop who fired at trans people in car while standing on hood sentenced to time served

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — I’ve been following this story since the incident first occurred. Kenneth Furr, a Washington DC police officer who was convicted of assault last October in a bizarre incident which found him standing on the hood of a car firing though the windshield at the trans occupants of the car, was recently sentenced.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Russell Canan sentenced Furr to time served, but he does face a number of probation conditions and is currently out of jail. Furr has apparently been suspended for a while now, and the DC police say there is a process for firing cops with felonies, but didn’t comment further.

My previous comments that he was no longer a DC cop may have been premature. Apparently Furr was just suspended from the force pending a final court decision.

I’m not so sure much justice was served here, but on the other hand no one was killed and we have a convicted cop from an area where trans people have been getting the short end of the justice stick.

Killer of Miami Beach trans woman arrested

Police arrested Miguel Pavon for the brutal murder of trans woman Rosita Hernandez

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — DNA and the victim’s obsession with cleanliness helped Miami Beach, Fla., Police nail the killer of trans woman Rosita Hernandez.

Police say it was Miguel Pavon who stabbed Hernandez last March in her South Beach apartment. He is charged with murder and is being held without bond. Although Hernandez’s sex worker status complicated the case, her friends were able to point out enough evidence in her apartment for the police lab to get a DNA match.

Pavon was already in jail on another charge when the DNA match was made.  Pavon previously gave the police a sample of his DNA over a year ago when he was being investigated for an earlier murder of a different person. Police did not state if the Hernandez murder was a hate crime following his arrest.

LAPD says ‘Western Bandit’ killed trans woman one year ago

LAPD says the “Western Bandit” killed trans woman Cassidy in 2011

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The LAPD has tied the death of trans woman Cassidy who was killed exactly one year ago on West Lexington Avenue in Hollywood during an armed robbery to a violent suspect who has terrorized the area with a string of robberies. The suspect is dubbed as the “Western Bandit” after the area he has conducted most of the robberies in.

The same night Cassidy was killed, another trans woman was shot at on Santa Monica Blvd., but no one was injured. The LAPD said the guy is quick to use his gun and that three of his robbery victims were transgender.

The LAPD said to the LA Times: “We have no evidence to suggest that this guy is specifically targeting people because of their sexual orientation, however we are greatly concerned.”

The Western Bandit is a black male, approx. 5-10′, stocky, and believed to be between 35 and 40 years old.

Trans woman sues U.S. federal gov’t over tasering by park ranger

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — I first reported this story a year ago — a video taken by a cell phone clearly shows trans woman Brooke Fantelli being tased by a Bureau of Land Management Park Ranger, now identified as J. Peter, following a confrontation. Fantelli claimed the ranger tased her because ‘she used to be a man’ and is now suing the ranger and the federal government.

I wrote then the gist of what the video showed: ‘A trans woman standing still, outside of her vehicle, with her hands held high in the air, is tasered in the abdomen.  Shortly after she fell to the ground, she was tasered again in the crotch.’

I also suggested that Fantelli didn’t appear to be an immediate threat to the two BLM rangers in the video — clearly something that did not warrant this kind of force. It appeared to be a BLM blunder and I suggested they settle the matter.

In the months that followed, there was no further news from the BLM or Fantelli on the matter, even though I searched a couple of times. And now, a year later, the lawsuit.

I have this feeling that we are missing quite a bit of other information that would give us a clue as to what exactly transpired in that incident. As a result, I no longer know what to think about this. We may have to wait for the outcome of the lawsuit.

Bizarre Oregon for-hire killing of partner by cop may have transgender rejection roots

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — While I’ve been following the story, I haven’t reported on it even though one of the parties involved is transgender. It then appeared to be more of a common domestic dispute with the transgender spouse being perhaps, the aggressor — not something out of the ordinary. However, a month after the murder, a third party was arrested for the killing and the investigation slogged along for over a year.

However, now there has been a rapid series of developments that suggest the trans person may have hired a hitman to kill his cis spouse because she wasn’t adapting well to her spouse’s gender change.

Quick background: Lesbian couple consist of a Gladstone, Oregon police sergeant Lynne Benton with partner beautician Deborah Higbee Benton. Later, Lynne undergoes gender change and changes legal name to Lynn Edwards Benton in 2009. There are relationship difficulties but they marry anyway in 2010. In 2011 Deborah is murdered and police arrest Susan Ellen Campbell for the murder. Later, Benton loses his cop job for supposedly unrelated matters and becomes a Greyhound bus driver.

Last week however, Lynn was indicted for plotting to murder Deborah. On Friday Susan Ellen Campbell pleaded guilty for the actual murder. Campbell’s son, Jason Jay Jaynes, was also indicted last week — suspected of participation in the plotting of the murder apparently before the Bentons got married.

Only now it appears that Deborah was killed in part for being unable to deal with Lynn changing his gender from a female to a male.  Some media outlets are jumping the gun — perhaps in an attempt to exploit the topic blaming it all on Lynn’s “sex change.” But, not all the fact are in. We have not heard from Lynn Benton. He has not been convicted of a crime yet.

After slugging along for over a year, this story is starting to develop quickly so perhaps in a week or so we may know more.

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE: DC cop gets guilty verdict! See below.] In August 2011, Washington DC Metro Police officers found off-duty MPD Officer Kenneth Furr standing on the hood of a car, firing his service revolver at two trans women and their friend through the windshield. The occupants of the car suffered only minor injuries.

Furr, who is no longer a DC cop, has pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and DUI. Jury selection for the trial begins next week.

DC Mayor Vincent Gray stated this in August: “These are serious charges, and they are particularly disturbing to have been brought against one who is sworn to protect and serve.”

From my last update on this story last March:

Apparently Furr, who was drunk at the time, attempted to solicit sex from a trans woman in a store which eventually resulted in a confrontation when she refused his advances and her friend entered the conversation. After the group was forced outside by a security guard, Furr brandished a gun upon entering his car then drove off. The other party met up with some friends and left in another car. A while later, these cars collided, which was followed by Furr jumping on the hood of the other car and firing five shots, supposedly yelling: “I’m a kill all of you.”

UPDATE – 10-26-12 — From The Washington Post:

A D.C.police officer who jumped onto the hood of a packed car and fired five gunshots at its occupants minutes after offering a transgender woman $500 for sex was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon Friday.

Kenneth D. Furr, 48, also was convicted of solicitation. He was acquitted of the most serious charge he faced, assault with intent to kill, and six related offenses stemming from an Aug. 26, 2011, argument that turned violent.

Trans woman murdered in the Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) area

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — January Marie Lapuz was stabbed at her home in the New Westminster area last Saturday night and died at a hospital shortly after. No one has been arrested but someone was seen running from the area.

Lapuz was highly regarded in the trans community, volunteering her time and active involvement in a LGBT social and support group. Lapuz moved to the area from the Phillipines and spoke 3 languages.

Sher Vancouver’s Alex Sangha: “She would volunteer as a host at our social events, help us out with fundraising and she’d even perform. … She did a great Beyonce and she was a great singer and dancer. She was the life of the party. She made everybody laugh. We already miss her a lot.” . . . “The obstacles she overcame as an immigrant, as a transgender person, as a person in poverty … she really overcame a lot. … I learned that society is not providing enough supports for people like January Marie.”

The police do not know why she was killed but report they do have some details that they don’t wish to release at this time. They also reported that she was a sometimes sex worker.

Police are looking a mid 20s Asian male, five foot five inches, short black hair, and muscular build, He was wearing gray shorts and a black muscle shirt. [UPDATE] Prominent ex-UK man who murdered his wife (who may have been transgender) starts jail term in Turkey

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE, see below.] With the amount of trans exploitation going on in the media, particularly by the British press, it is nearly impossible pin down whether or not Julia Collier’s was actually transgender and if she was, did that status actually figured into her death, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter — Chris Collier did murder his wife and a Turkish court convicted him in August for it and now he’s paying for his crime in a Turkish jail. Justice served.

Chris Collier came to fame as part of the British Phones4U empire before moving to Kusadasi, Turkey. As far as I can tell, Julia worked as a singing and piano teacher in Turkey before meeting up with Chris Collier.

[UPDATE: I corrected portions of this report when it was pointed out that Julia may not even have been transgender and the claim(s) she was one may have been a fabrication.]

The press is having a heyday seemingly blaming it on the husband “discovery” that she is transgender. Indeed, research a media watch group raises compelling doubt on the tabloids’ claim Julia is even transgender.

Looking at the facts, the math doesn’t add up. Not even close. Pure typical tabloidism to make a buck at the expense of giving trans people a black eye. In addition to trying to excuse his behavior, the tabloids tried to draw attention to the fact he was going to spend his jail term in a Turkish prison and ought to be serving it in the UK instead.

No pity, he’s right where he deserves to be.

Asylum panel in Denmark apparently reopens trans woman seeking refugee case

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — There is no English news account of the apparent decision by the Danish asylum panel and I’m working from Danish-to-English translations. Apparently there is good news. First the back story from my earlier report:

Fernanda Milan left Guatemala after a police officer held a gun to her head threatening to kill her if she didn’t stop her advocacy work. While it is not clear how she ended up in Denmark, but the organization LGBT-Denmark is providing the Danish asylum panel with evidence of the circumstances in Guatemala. Milan says she fears torture and death if she was to return.

Since that story, I was told that a decision was already made to send Milan back home. However, trans and LGBT advocates were working to get the Danish asylum panel to reopen the decision. Apparently this effort has succeeded.

Man arrested in NYC McDonald’s knifing of trans woman’s partner

Keith Patron arrested for the knifing of trans woman’s partner

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A Bronx man whose surveillance photo was distributed by NYPD police following a brutal knifing of Jamar McLeod, a man defending his trans woman partner at a NYC McDonald’s, has been arrested. Police identified him as Keith Patron, 44, of Morrisania. There is not much additional details from the police at this time.

I reported on the story 2 days ago: “Yup, another vicious attack resulting from a trans person’s use of a public bathroom. This time it was the trans woman’s boyfriend who was knifed by an irate customer at a Greenwich Village (NYC) McDonald’s after he became angry when trans woman Jalisa “JoJo” Griffen attempted to use the women’s restroom. A melee with anti-gay slurs ensued and Griffen’s boyfriend was cut severely in the face by a razor.

The arrested man’s sister is reportedly giving a different account of what happened. She refused to give her name but she supposedly said it was self-defense: “Someone kneed him and hurt him and he was trying to defend himself. The girlfriend was edging on the boyfriend to defend her.”
