THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Oregon’s Laura Calvo, a Democrat Party activist and former sheriff deputy is the first transgender person elected to Democratic National Committee. Another trans woman, AnmBarbra Casbar Siperstein, the first one to serve on the committee, was appointed.

Democratic Party of Oregon’s Meredith Wood Smith: “Everyone who’s worked with Laura Calvo knows what I know – she’s a superstar. We couldn’t be prouder to have her represent the Democratic Party of Oregon as a member of the Democratic National Committee.”

There is very little information beyond this, however, I did find a picture of her for this piece.

Attorney General tells trans woman Stacie Laughton she’s ineligible to run for office

Stacie Laughton (Photo: Union-Leader)

Stacie Laughton (Photo: Union-Leader)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Stacie Laughton’s political aspirations in New Hampshire seems to have finally ended. Attorney General Michael Delaney said earlier this week that Laughton hasn’t fully discharged her criminal sentences so therefore is ineligible to run for political office.

Laughton is reportedly going to withdraw her candidacy to fill the vacant state legislature seat left open by her earlier resignation after winning that seat last November.

The saga of Laughton’s short, but eventful political career includes announcing that she was quitting after her prior felonies were disclosed after she was elected, however, she later changed her mind, and decided to keep her seat only to once again changed her mind and signed resignation papers on local TV. She later announced she was going to run for the now-vacant seat she once held. She also opened some eyes after being seen ringing a bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas holidays.

[UPDATE Nov.30th -- She resigns again!] New transgender NH legislator decides not to resign after all

Stacie Laughton (Photo: WMUR)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE (Nov. 30) -- She resigned again. See below.] The on again, off again short political career of newly elected New Hampshire state Rep. Stacie Laughton is apparently on again. Her words: “I’m reconsidering, and I’m seeking the advice of professionals and through social media.”

Laughton made the news shortly after being the first trans person elected to the statehouse. But made bigger news when it was learned she has a previous felony conviction: http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/11/14/updated-2-ttrans-woman-legislator-resigns-trans-woman-elected-to-new-hampshire-state-legislature/

From The New Hampshire News: On Laughton’s Facebook page, she asked her 1,368 friends Wednesday whether she should give up or continue. Four hours later, nine people had urged her to stay put and explore the legality of the situation.

Republicans in the state are still calling for Laughton to resign. Felons are allowed to run for office in NH under certain conditions. Apparently the state Attorney General is reviewing the matter. Their decision likely to be the final arbitrator of whether Laughton decides to stay or go.

Laughton is schedule to appear on a local TV show to explain her decision on Nov. 29th if my information is correct.

Stay tuned!

——–

UPDATE Nov. 30, 2012 It looks like she resigned again.

From the Nashua Telegraph:

“Those who thought she should vacate the N.H. House seat got their wish Thursday when Laughton signed her resignation letter on a local cable access television station.”

President-elect Romney’s transition website is live . . . (by mistake!)

Composite of elements from Romney’s transition webpage

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “I’m excited about our prospects as a nation” says Romney on a presidential transition website that included details on how to apply for a position with the new administration. This would have been a truly heart-stopping moment for many of us had we stumbled upon it during the time it was live.

Breathing normally now knowing that it was uploaded by mistake, one can’t help feel a bit of unease of how close it came to being reality. Sort of like peering into a future that might have been had not we came to our senses at the last moment.

For the record though, having a website prepared and ready to go would have been prudent, although making it live, even for just a bit, was a major blunder.

The images I used are composites of elements from the Romney website (now down) but you can view screen shots at this link.  Whoops! Romney’s ‘transition’ website spotted by blogger – Technology on NBCNews.com.

First openly transgender mayor in the U.S., Stu Rasmussen, re-elected to fifth term

Silverton, Oregon Mayor Stu Rasmussen

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Silverton, Oregon voters re-elected Mayor Stu Rasmussen, for a reported 5th term on Tuesday. Rasmussen previously gained national attention as the first openly transgender mayor in the United States.

While I’m not quite sure which pronoun Rasmussen prefers we use, but I’ve a hunch it doesn’t matter to Silverton’s mayor.

From Rasmussen’s campaign website:

Really?

If you just stumbled on this site you may be asking yourself “Is this guy for real?” or “Is that guy for real”?

I’m Stu Rasmussen. I own and operate several small businesses in Silverton, Oregon (population 9,588). I have also served 24 years as an elected official in local government, as City Councilor, Mayor and member of the Silver Falls Library board. I completed my third 4-year term on the Silverton City Council in 2008 and ran for Mayor at that time. When I won, it was ‘no big deal’ here in Silverton, but for some reason that election attracted a lot of attention elsewhere.

I just happen to be transgendered – something I didn’t even know the word for until I discovered it on the Internet. . .”

Congrats to Stu!

Transgender Americans win big with Obama’s victory

President Obama re-elected (Photo: Washington Post)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The Supreme Court will get perhaps 2 more trans-friendly justices appointed. Trans-friendly policies and administrative rules won’t be rescinded in the name of “Cutting Red Tape.” Transgender civil rights and other legal gains won’t be challenged in court on order from the Executive Branch. These are just a few of the things the re-election of President Barack Obama has ensured that being transgender in American will not result in a negative impact for you come January 2013.

In other words, we get to continue living in the 21st century. And for that, my friends, I thank you for your support.

Trans people, on Election Day 2012, consider your safety net (or your lack of one)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — No one can tell you how to vote. If you believe a vote for Mitt Romney will serve you better, cast that ballot for him. People do high wire acts without a net all the time, after all, this is America!

But if things don’t turn out the way you expect, as they often do,  consider your safety net — who will speak for you, a trans person, when you’ve fallen down, whether by yourself, or tripped up by society?

Yes, I know the difficulty it is for some to put their conservative values aside and place their trans well-being first – but here’s the thing — your conservative colleagues, friends and family will continue to ensure those views are heard, but only you can put a safety net under those values, because if you fall, there just might not be anyone there to catch you.

Invest in yourself for a change. It’s difficult enough being transgender in the best of times, and way too many people become another anonymous transgender fatality statistic when times are difficult. Your ballot choices are private and nobody needs to know you voted for your well-being first, not even the Democrats.

Two weeks until election day 2012 — two things trans people need to know

Mitt Romney isn’t going to be playing Battleship with President Obama again anytime soon

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — For many of you, the time to vote is now. The ballot came in the mail and it is sitting on your kitchen table.

Set aside for a moment the promises, the debates, questions about trust, and consider this: You are a trans person — only two things really matter when choosing a presidential candidate.

1) When a bill crosses the president’s desk for his signature, will he sign into law legislation that helps brings trans people equal parity with the rest of the citizens of the United States? Or will it be the signature of legislation placing hurdles in the way?

Likewise, will your president use his veto power to prevent legislation detrimental for trans people from becoming law?

2) Long after your president has completed his term, the Supreme Court justices he has appointed will remain on the bench for decades to come.  The Supreme Court is the final arbitrator of laws passed in the United States. Will the justices your president appoints ensure equal parity for trans people?

The current members of the Supreme Court recent ruled that ‘corporations are people.’ Yet, here we are, trans people in America, still second-class citizens. Clearly, Supreme Court appointees matter! Legislation enacted in the next couple of decades favoring transgender people will most certainly be challenged in court — with many of these cases ending up in the hands of justices appointed by the president we elect just two weeks from now.

If you’re a trans person, the choice isn’t a difficult one to make.

Mitt Romney isn’t going to be playing Battleship with President Obama again anytime soon

Argentina’s 21st century transgender ID change laws vs the United States’ 19th century Bible quoting judges

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Yes, I’m talking about you, Judge Bill Graves. I had a splash of water thrown on my face when I was reminded earlier today of Argentina’s simple 15-day wait period, (almost) no questions asked, legal gender ID change policy.

I first wrote about this back in June:

Argentina’s groundbreaking gender-identity law puts those of all other countries to shame, especially including the United States. Simply put, if you feel you are of a different gender from the one you born with, then that’s good enough to get your gender ID officially changed in Argentina. A stunningly smart step into the future.

http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/argentinas-smart-step-into-the-future-transgender-id-law-now-in-effect/

In addition, according to a report by National Public Radio, if a transgender person in Argentina wants SRS, the health system there will cover it.

There’s a reason we’ve a foot in the 19th Century in the United States — we continue to elect Representatives in Congress who will never vote favorably on any pro-trans legislation, never mind passing a national law permitting a 15-day, no questions asked, gender ID changes.

Your vote matters. So why not vote trans first?

(Graves was re-elected unchallenged in 2010. There’s plenty of time for a savvy person in Oklahoma to mount a challenge for the position.)

Share this photo wide and far!

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — This is one of those photos says more than a thousand words — not only do you see a cross section of America, but every single person in the photo is transgender.

All 12 of them will be representing us at the 2012 Democratic National Convention this week.

Take a good look at this photo and think back to the people you saw at the Republican convention last week. Vote accordingly in November.

Hank Williams Jr: “We’ve got a Muslim president . . .”

Hank Williams Jr

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Somehow I don’t think telling 8,500 people at the Iowa State Fair one heck of a whopper using an incendiary topic of like Muslim is entertainment. Maybe at a Rush Limbaugh rally. But at a state fair?

Williams: “We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the US and we hate him!”

Even Sen. John McCain was civilized enough to grab the microphone away from one of his bigoted supporter at a rally and set the record straight on Obama back in 2008. ‘Obama is a fine family man and not a Muslim,’ McCain said along these lines, leaving no doubt in the minds of those in attendance.

Last year after Williams criticized Obama on a television news program, ESPN dropped their usage of his music for the theme of “Monday Night Football” after 22 years. That’s a steady chunk of change to lose.

Hank Williams Jr. may have all the money he ever needs, but this disgraceful tarnishing of country music family legend has been pretty ugly to watch. Folks, we’re now looking at the bottom of a barrel.

Canadian hate group targets conservative MPs for supporting transgender rights

Canadian MP Bruce Stanton (Photo: simcoe.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A so-called “family values” organization has targeted 15 Conservative members of Parliament for their support of an amendment to the Canadian Human Rights Act which gives transgender Canadians stronger protection against discrimination.

The Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) became angry following a Parliament vote  approving the amendment (Bill C-279) – had the 15 Conservatives voted the other way, the amendment would have been defeated. There will be another vote this fall and if passed, the measure will move on to the Senate. The CLC in the meantime needs to convince nearly all of the 15 MPs to change their minds if they wish to derail the amendment.

MP Bruce Stanton (one of the 15 Conservatives voting for the amendment): “I’ve heard from people in our own riding that are conflicted in this way and that are discriminated against. It’s a great source of anguish…. I believe that this group of Canadians deserves to have the same tools available to them in the law to prevent that kind of discrimination.”

I’d like to remind our transgender Canadian friends that they need to support our conservative allies in Parliament. All 15 MPs need to be contacted and praised for doing the right thing in the face of this opposition from within their own party.

Under disguise of “protecting business,” religious activist blasts transgender people, ENDA

Tony Perkins says trans people are men dressed in drag

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “Can you imagine walking into your child’s classroom and meeting a teacher dressed in drag?” This was said by a prominent opponent of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) following testimony from a transgender person  during a ENDA hearing in the U.S. Senate last week.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council: “It wasn’t too long ago that homosexual activists said they just wanted ‘to get the government out of their bedroom’ … Now we know why: they wanted to put their bedroom in the workplace!”

On the topic of trans people, Perkins said this: “. . . this legislation [EDNA] would extend those special protections to transgenders. In other words, businesses and public organizations would have to bend their dress codes and change their bathroom and shower policies to accommodate men who dress like women and vice-versa. Can you imagine walking into your child’s classroom and meeting a teacher dressed in drag?”

Of course, none of this rhetoric has much to do with EDNA, but the fear generated by Perkins and others of this ilk kept all Republicans from attending the EDNA hearing.

Committee chairman Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) hopes for a swift move for EDNA through the committee but couldn’t promise a time frame beyond that. The Trans People of Color Coalition’s Kylar Broadus was among those testifying at the hearing.

Newsworthy to trans people is a 2011 report by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law that indicates 78% of trans people are harassed at work.

As for Perkins, remember the power he yields is diminished by a rising number of Democrats elected to the Senate and House. Please vote accordingly.

[UPDATE-2 Fort Knox cancels Nugent concert] Ted Nugent’s draft dodging techniques

Is Nugent a hero?

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE -  Military cancels Nugent concert, Nugent pleads guilty to federal wildlife violation. See below.] If someone wants to dodge the draft, I suppose it’s their choice, after all, former vice president Dick Cheney set an example for many people by getting five deferments and avoided Vietnam entirely.

But then, Dick Cheney didn’t insinuate violence against the president (I can’t believe I’m using Cheney again in a positive portrayal!) like Ted Nugent did last weekend.

Ted Nugent at a National Rifle Association gathering: “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November.  I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” He also ranted about a “vile, evil, America-hating administration.”

A public figure doesn’t get to use “free speech” rhetoric to justify harming, or threatening to harm the president. So, as a result, Nugent has a meeting scheduled today with the Secret Service (sans girls, of course) to explain his behavior. While some are calling for his head, I think he’ll just be forced to make a public apology and the Secret Service will move on to other matters.

Nugent, however, did open the door into his draft-dodging history. According to Nugent in an earlier report, he quit showering and ate nothing but junk food prior to the physical exam then showed up with several days worth of crusty poop in his pants. The scheme worked.

How’s that for a great American hero?

UPDATE-1 April 21, 2012: Military cancels Ted Nugent concert:

Fort Knox has cancelled Ted Nugent’s appearance at its annual summer concert, following the rocker’s incendiary comments about President Obama.

Nugent had been scheduled to headline the June 23rd concert at the Kentucky military base, along with REO Speedwagon and Styx. But the controversy he attracted last week when he told a group of NRA supporters that he would be “dead or in jail” next year if Obama was reelected did not sit well with Fort Knox’s leadership.

“After learning of opening act Ted Nugent’s recent public comments about the president of the United States, Fort Knox leadership decided to cancel his performance on the installation,” read an announcement posted to Fort Knox’s Facebook page on Thursday afternoon.”

————
UPDATE-2 April 21, 2012: Nugent guilty of a federal wildlife violation:
“Rocker Ted Nugent has agreed to plead guilty to a federal wildlife violation for killing one black bear too many during a hunting expedition at a national forest in Alaska, . . . Nugent has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine and be barred from hunting or fishing in Alaska or any U.S. national forest for a year, according to the plea agreement Nugent signed last Saturday.  . . . He has also agreed to produce a 30- to 60-second public service announcement about responsible hunting that is to be aired every other week on his television program for a year . . .”
