Professional trans athlete comes out, ends up in a licensing controversy

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — As far as I can tell, it has little to do with her being transgender — or maybe it does and everyone is tiptoeing around trying to avoid stating the obvious. The Sports Illustrated article on the topic requires too much reading between the lines to figure it all out. I selected SI because they were the ones who revealed on Monday that martial arts fighter Fallon Fox was transgender.

Fox’s sex reassignment surgery occurred in 2006 and has fought in two bouts — this supposedly would make her the first trans athlete in that sport. Unfortunately that milestone was overshadowed with the news that her license to fight is under investigation.

I don’t understand the sport or the sport’s  licensing procedures to comment on it, however I do see little comments (and sometimes the lack of comments) that hints at there being something more than just a paperwork snafu.

If anybody wants to take a crack at this and figure it out and comment, be my guest: Transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox faces licensing problems – MMA – Loretta Hunt – SI.com.

  1. Lexie, I have a friend that is a MMA fighter and quite familiar with the workings of the organization. I have asked his opinion and will get back to you.

whatever excuse they come up with, about the license should be scrutinized with a magnifying glass. there may be a legitimate reason, but it should be crystal clear and no ambiguities at all.

  3. Mae Rogers says:

What’s the big deal?If she’s been on HRT for that long, there is very little to no advantage.As. Matter of fact many HRT regimens leave one with a lower testosterone level than most women have.

  4. Joan says:

I don’t know anything about US licensing regulations. I do know that in my country (the Netherlands) the National Sports Organisation and the Olympic commitee regard “trans people” as women or men, period. They can compete on any level.

  5. Erica Forman says:

As a sports fan, and a fan of your blog, I gave it a crack! Sounds like they want to pull something here, and discriminate against her, but neither jurisdiction is willing to take the heat publicly. My opinion is to let her fight if she’s physically capable of doing so. Transgender people need to break down the barriers in sports, so I hope her licensing is successful!

  6. I doubt she’s the only trans* and/or intersexed player out there. And were you referring to comments on SI? I’m not seeing any there, did they yank them?

    • Lexie Cannes says:

Dawn, look at the second paragraph. It says:

“On Monday, the 37-year-old Fox (2-0) revealed exclusively to SI.com that she’s a transgender fighter — the first on record, male or female, to compete in the combat sport.”

  7. Zara says:

This stuff is written as if she wouldn´t be a “real” woman.
So I would never ever come out if I´d be famous, not kidding.

Transgender is still a derogative normative term invented by some sexistic and genitalistic lobby-sexologists in the 60s to relativize the femaleness/maleness of wrong assigned people, maybe it´s not so bad for ppl who really define between genders but I´d never use this term for men or women and she is for sure a woman, not a transgender.

I would prefer killing myself or/and vanishing to out myself if having had a dick would be put on a same level with beeing “transgender” thats only one step ahead to the claim that I´d be male, especially in the false official assignation.

Worst is that society than feels authorized to publish the wrong assigned name and body state as an “objective” and non derogative as a neutral non violent part of ones “personality” or personal data and to write about a “he” in the past what is much worse than other forms of slander.

  8. Lexie Cannes says:

Thanks for the comments all! :)

  9. MOST sports organizations want the person to have done all “required” (loosely used by me, but its their language) steps and been done for at least 2 years. I looked into it for personal reasons.
