Canadian hate group targets conservative MPs for supporting transgender rights

Canadian MP Bruce Stanton (Photo: simcoe.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A so-called “family values” organization has targeted 15 Conservative members of Parliament for their support of an amendment to the Canadian Human Rights Act which gives transgender Canadians stronger protection against discrimination.

The Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) became angry following a Parliament vote  approving the amendment (Bill C-279) – had the 15 Conservatives voted the other way, the amendment would have been defeated. There will be another vote this fall and if passed, the measure will move on to the Senate. The CLC in the meantime needs to convince nearly all of the 15 MPs to change their minds if they wish to derail the amendment.

MP Bruce Stanton (one of the 15 Conservatives voting for the amendment): “I’ve heard from people in our own riding that are conflicted in this way and that are discriminated against. It’s a great source of anguish…. I believe that this group of Canadians deserves to have the same tools available to them in the law to prevent that kind of discrimination.”

I’d like to remind our transgender Canadian friends that they need to support our conservative allies in Parliament. All 15 MPs need to be contacted and praised for doing the right thing in the face of this opposition from within their own party.

Young lesbian couple found shot in Texas — motive for the shooting not known

Mary Chapa, Mollie Olgin (Photo: NBC-TV)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — The victims were teens, 19 and 18. Mollie Olgin died from her wounds, and Mary Chapa is in serious but stable condition following surgery. Both were shot in the head and found in a south Texas park.

The police have not found a shooter and it is not known if their sexuality played a part in the shooting. They did find a bullet casing and a witness heard shots but thought they were firecrackers. The couple was found in a remote area of the park not usually frequented during the hours they were there. The police are supposedly trying to put together information to identify a suspect.

Friends of the victims say no one has responded negatively to their relationship.

It’s too early to even remotely speculate what triggered the shooting but it does serve as a reminder that all trans and LGBT people ought to take steps to stay safe. I’ll update if more becomes known.

Argentina’s ‘smart step into the future’ transgender ID law now in effect

A transgender police officer in Argentina (Photo: hrgeneration.org)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Argentina’s groundbreaking gender-identity law puts those of all other countries to shame, especially including the United States. Simply put, if you feel you are of a different gender from the one you born with, then that’s good enough to get your gender ID officially changed in Argentina. A stunningly smart step into the future.

For the rest of the world, the current 19th Century thinking on gender ID change process needs to go away. It shouldn’t matter to anyone of a person’s gender status  — especially for government, religious or other public and private entities. The question of whether one is a genetic, cis or trans person is a question that should no longer be asked in our society. The only exception to this, of course, would be between two parties involved in a personal relationship.

Trans people don’t need third parties like doctors, judges and government officials to decide on something we already know and can do for ourselves.  Argentina is now leading the rest of us towards a future with a barrier-free, test-free and embarrassment-free gender ID change process. My hats off to them for leading the way.

Virgina transgender victim no-show, charges dropped

Off the hook!

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT –Two people charged with the beating of trans woman Ahnesia Jett in Brad Hill, Virgina, were set free and charges dropped when the victim and a witness failed to show up in court.

Jett was a victim of a mob beating in May 2011 that resulted in one plea agreement — Gregory Allen Frye Jr. spent 15 days in jail for throwing a punch. But Farkeem French and Laqueta Webb, held out for a trial for their part in the beating.

The prosecution previously had trouble getting the witness, Sharon Forsyth, to show for earlier court dates and with the victim failing to appear this time around, it was likely the last straw for the judge.

The defense attorney says that the incident had nothing to with Jett being transgender. Jett states otherwise. However, with the charges dropped, this case is over.

84-year-old Chinese trans woman comes out, first Briton to have SRS awarded MBE

84-year-old trans woman Qian Jinfan

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Although Qian Jinfan didn’t start living as a woman until she was 80-years-old, she knew at age 3 she wasn’t meant to be a male. Sex reassignment surgery came at age 82 and now, at age 84, Jinfan outs herself in an interview for Southern Metropolitan Daily advocating for trans people.

Jinfan, who is now China’s oldest trans person, is a former government official, a calligrapher, and an art critic. She recalls always thinking it would be great to be a girl when she was younger, but kept these things inside until her marriage to a woman ended at age 80.

Jinfan: “I don’t think I’m inferior to anyone. I will not give up so easily. I have done nothing wrong.”

Qian Jinfan, China’s Oldest Transgender Woman, ‘Outs’ Herself In Advocacy Bid.

British trans woman April Ashley, the first Briton to have SRS, was awarded Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) during the Queens Birthday Honors. Ashley, now 77, is a well-known and somewhat flamboyant trans woman who made a name for herself through close association with many artists and entertainers, but it was her efforts to get the British law changed in 2005 bringing equality to trans people as the primary reason this honor was bestowed on her.

Congrats to both of these trans role models!

Under disguise of “protecting business,” religious activist blasts transgender people, ENDA

Tony Perkins says trans people are men dressed in drag

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “Can you imagine walking into your child’s classroom and meeting a teacher dressed in drag?” This was said by a prominent opponent of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) following testimony from a transgender person  during a ENDA hearing in the U.S. Senate last week.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council: “It wasn’t too long ago that homosexual activists said they just wanted ‘to get the government out of their bedroom’ … Now we know why: they wanted to put their bedroom in the workplace!”

On the topic of trans people, Perkins said this: “. . . this legislation [EDNA] would extend those special protections to transgenders. In other words, businesses and public organizations would have to bend their dress codes and change their bathroom and shower policies to accommodate men who dress like women and vice-versa. Can you imagine walking into your child’s classroom and meeting a teacher dressed in drag?”

Of course, none of this rhetoric has much to do with EDNA, but the fear generated by Perkins and others of this ilk kept all Republicans from attending the EDNA hearing.

Committee chairman Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) hopes for a swift move for EDNA through the committee but couldn’t promise a time frame beyond that. The Trans People of Color Coalition’s Kylar Broadus was among those testifying at the hearing.

Newsworthy to trans people is a 2011 report by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law that indicates 78% of trans people are harassed at work.

As for Perkins, remember the power he yields is diminished by a rising number of Democrats elected to the Senate and House. Please vote accordingly.

Nat’l Association of the Deaf, Gallaudet University face lawsuits

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — On the heels of a major ruckus following a decision to invite an anti-LGBT speaker to their national conference, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is being threatened with a lawsuit for alleged mishandling of internal affairs.

This is from a document distributed through a reputable deaf academics listserv:

“Ladies and Gentlemen of the [NAD] Board: In regard to the actions taken by some NAD Board Members named herein, we are filing complaint and notice of intent to sue. The NAD Board, over a course of almost 20 years has actively oppressed, suppressed, and discriminated against the Library Friends Section of the NAD and the Deaf Community at large. . . .

Written by: Alec C. McFarlane, NAD/LFS Member and LFS Delegate Alec.McFarlane@gmail.com April 20, 2012 Distributed June 14, 2012. Approved by: Alice L. Hagemeyer, NAD Member and LFS ChairAlbert Berke, NAD/LFS Member and Past NAD Board Member”

Anti-transgender Boy Scouts organization get another black eye

Open discrimination against trans and LGB people — avoid the Boy Scouts

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — This time it is an order from the Oregon Supreme Court for the public release of their “perversion files” — a 20 year record of suspected child molesters from within the organization.

While the Boy Scout organization won a court victory a few years back that allowed them to exclude LGBT people from participating in the scouts, they have  however, been hammered with sex abuse allegations and  court cases, including recent a $18.5 million dollar payout to a victim in Portland, Oregon. That case involved former assistant scoutmaster Timur Dykes who has admitted to molesting at least 17 boys.

It was the Dykes case that attracted media attention to the existence of the “perversion files” — supposedly 1,200 names and 20,000 pages. Media organizations, including The Oregonian, and The New York Times, filed a lawsuit to get the files released. While the scouts fought to keep the files sealed, a Multnomah county judge and later, the Oregon Supreme Court, ordered the files released.

IMO, as far as the Boy Scouts are concerned, transgender and LGB people should avoid them for their outrageous discrimination practices, and for everyone else, to prevent children from being sexually abused, because it took a court case to find out who the molesters were.

Oregon Supreme Court says Boy Scouts ‘perversion files’ are public record – The Washington Post.

The term “transgender” caused Gov. Mitt Romney to kill Massachusetts anti-bullying guide

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Are you transgender and are still thinking about voting for Gov. Mitt Romney this November? Let me help you here a bit: Mitt Romney would rather kill a state-sponsored antibullying guide than have the word “transgender” (and “bisexual”) appear in it.

While the Romney administration claimed at the time the guide needed ‘further review’ when they delayed it however, new information from an email recently obtained by the Boston Globe indicates the motive for killing the guide was partisan — not at all what Romney’s people led us to believe.

From the email: “Because this is using the terms ‘bisexual’ and ‘transgendered,’ DPH’s name may not be used in this publication,’’ wrote the official, Alda Rego-Weathers, then the deputy commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

In the email Rego-Weathers stated she had been ‘consulting with Romney’s office on the issue.’ More from the Boston Globe:

Stifling the guide’s publication was among steps that Romney and his aides took during his last year in office to distance the Republican governor from state programs designed to specifically support gays, lesbians, and bisexual and transgender people. . . .”

This document is particularly troublesome because it singles out transgender (and bisexual) individuals — are we suppose to take this to mean we are “worse” than being lesbian or gay in Romney’s mind?

Please consider your place in Romney’s world when you vote this November.

There is a bit of good news to report for bullied kids in Massachusetts . . .

After Democrat Gov. Deval Patrick took office in 2008, a 120-page “Guide to Bullying Prevention’’ was released state-wide and yes, transgender is included.

Trans woman seeks to re-enlist in the National Guard, Isis King to model for American Apparel

Ashley Ackley, Isis King

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Ashley Ackley served in Iraq as Specialist John Ackley, came home and transitioned to a woman. Later Ackley inquired about re-enlistment in the National Guard. It seems they were on board with plan until they discovered Ackley’s transition.

Minn. Nat. Guard’s Lt. Col. Kevin Olson: “A history of, or current manifestations of…transsexual, gender identity disorder to include major abnormalities or defects of genitalia such as change of sex or a current attempt to change sex…or dysfunctional residuals from surgical correction of these conditions render an individual administratively unfit.”

“Administratively unfit”? Really? Even after serving in Iraq?

Ackley isn’t letting this stop her. She’s bringing national attention to the matter including appearing on CNN and winning the support of national transgender organizations. She certainly has my backing. Read more here: Daily Kos: Transgender woman seeks to re-enlist.

U Georgia professor busted for prostitution – transgender status unknown

“Sasha”

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — A well-known University of Georgia German professor, Max Reinhart, was arrested for prostitution. Reinhart was dressed in drag at the time and as far as I can tell, Reinhart has not disclosed whether or not he is transgender.

I recognize that many trans people do support themselves by being  sex workers and I do not condemn the practice because people who usually do so, often have no choice — I would never embarrass a trans person for making an income this way. In this case, however, the person has ample income and is well-known. This is what makes it news and it will be covered by the media regardless what we think its news worthiness is.

Reinhart was caught after police investigated an advertisement in the ‘transsexual service’ section of backpage.com. The name “Sasha” was used and Reinhart reportedly asked for $60 for the services when talking to an undercover detective.

Reinhart on Channel 2 Action News: “This charge is not exactly what it appears, OK. I can only say that. . . .  I’m embarrassed. I’m feeling very stupid.”

Interesting twist . . . I’d be curious to know if Reinhart is doing this just for the money or because the motive is rooted in gender curiosity or more.

[UPDATE - Bank pulls out of Pride parade] Portland, Ore., molotov cocktail bomb attempt is reaction to trans woman CeCe McDonald jailing

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE: Bank pulls out of Pride parade. See below.] An unlit molotov cocktail and a broken window was found in a Wells Fargo bank Wednesday and an email sent to a Portland television station indicated that the people claiming responsibility for the bomb attempt took this action out of ‘solidarity’ for trans woman CeCe McDonald.

There are no other details or other news sources reporting on this crime. CeCe McDonald was sentenced to 3.5 years a few days ago for her part in a confrontation that left one man dead.

Here are some excerpts from the email:

“This action has been committed in solidarity with CeCe McDonald, a trans woman of color who rightfully defended herself from assault and has been sentenced to 41 months in a men’s prison, despite her gender and valid safety concerns, as transgendered women face high instances of physical and sexual assault in men’s prisons.”

. . .

”Wells Fargo stands as an easy target, funding the prison industrial complex along with the policing and judicial system which uphold the banking system and its profits… With such institutionalized corruption forcing beautiful queers like CeCe through such immense hardship, attacking these institutions directly is a small but necessary gesture. Just as the police attack our comrades to reify (sic) their position of power, we queers and dissenters attack back to assert just the opposite — that police and state control is illusionary.”

—————

UPDATE: Wells Fargo pulls out of Portland Pride parade over safety concerns:

Wells Fargo Bank won’t be participating in this year’s Portland Pride Parade because of safety concerns, a company spokesman confirmed Friday.

The decision comes just two days after vandalism at a Wells Fargo Bank branch on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where it appears there was an attempt to throw a molotov cocktail through a window. Arson investigators and police responded, but it turned out there was no fire.

A gay rights activist group claimed responsibility for the vandalism in an email to FOX 12. The reason for the vandalism, the email said, was that Wells Fargo funds a prison industrial complex where a transgendered woman is serving a sentence in a men’s prison. The group said this puts the woman at a higher risk of sexual assault.

A Wells Fargo spokesman said the company doesn’t want to put employees at risk of assault or the company’s replica stagecoach at risk of vandalism during the parade.

Wells Fargo workers will still have a booth at the Portland Pride Parade and Festival, and a spokesman said the company hopes to return next year.

Anyone with information about this vandalism, which happened overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, is asked to contact Arson Investigator Rick McGraw at (503) 823-3797.

Courtney O’Donnell: Tracking the Pastors (Four and Counting) Calling for the Death of LGBT People

[I wrote this for the Huffington Post. You can also read it on their site here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/courtney-odonnell/anti-gay-pastors_b_1566346.html ]

I’ve been tracking these recent calls by pastors for the death of LGBT people on my blog, and a few readers are saying my headlines are misleading, but in doing so they seemingly excuse these pastors’ behavior by stating, among other things, that they were “just quoting Scripture” or “thinking out loud.” I disagree. Pastors are held in high regard by many in our society who look for guidance in their lives; therefore, a higher level of accountability is necessary. These “I wish they were dead… just kidding!” tactics ought to come with consequences that discourage further use.

Here’s where we are:

Pastor Curtis Knapp of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kan. said that God said that LGBT people should be put to death and that the government should be the one doing it:

“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death.” Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them? No, I’m saying the government should. They won’t, but they should.

Pastor Knapp continued:

Is it His word or not? If it’s His word, he commanded it. It’s His idea, not mine. And I’m not ashamed of it. He said put them to death. Shall the church drag them in? No, I’m not say that. The church has not been given the power of the sort; the government has. But the government ought to [kill them]. You got a better idea? A better idea than God?

Charles L. Worley, Pastor of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, N.C., says an electrified pen will do the trick:

Build a great, big, large fence, 150 or 100 mile long. Put all the lesbians in there. Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified till they can’t get out. Feed ‘em. And you know what? In a few years they’ll die out. You know why? They can’t reproduce.

But he wasn’t done yet: “It makes me pukin’ sick to think about — I don’t even know whether you ought to say this in the pulpit or not — could you imagine kissing some man?”

Fortunately, in this case, more than 1,000 people showed up in this small town to protest Pastor Worley’s hate-filled sermon.

Mississippi state Rep. Andy Gipson, who is reportedly a minister at an undisclosed Baptist church, made a recent post on Facebook invoking Leviticus 20:13, a passage from the Bible that allegedly requires the death of LGBT people: “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” In the ensuing uproar Gipson refused to apologize, saying he has overwhelming support: “To be clear, I want the world to know that I do not, cannot, and will not apologize for the inspired truth of God’s Word.”

Pastor Dennis Leatherman at Mountain Lake Baptist Church in Oakland, Md., is intrigued by the idea of killing effeminate and LGBT people:

To … have a tendency to be effeminate or homosexual is just as wicked as to have a tendency to be a womanizer. Sinful nature does not justify sinful behavior. Now what is our take? What is our response? I appreciate your bearing with me tonight. First of all, there is a danger of reacting in the flesh, of responding not in a scriptural, spiritual way, but in a fleshly way. Kill them all. Right? I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea. But it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture. It is wrong.

Leatherman would like to kill us but won’t, because the Bible says it’s wrong. What a nice, reassuring thought from a man of God.

I am hoping for a quiet Sunday this time around.
