THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT by Lexie Cannes

Rational thinking and reporting on all things transgender by Lexie Cannes.

Geez, a THIRD pastor calls for the death of LGBT people

Just when you thought it might be safe to go to Church again

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — What is this? Open season to unload hate in the name of God? I had to add another pastor to the photo array. Just a few days ago I wrote a post about two pastors who called for the death of of LGBT people. They were Charles L. Worley, Pastor of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina, and Mississippi state Rep. Andy Gipson, who is reportedly a minister at an undisclosed Baptist church. Read about them here:
http://lexiecannes.wordpress.com/2012/05/21/pastors-call-for-the-death-of-lgbt-people/

The latest is Pastor Curtis Knapp of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kansas. He said this last Sunday to his congregation:

“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Oh, so you’re saying we should go out and start killing them, no?   I’m saying the government should. They won’t, but they should.”

Pastor Knapp continues:

“. . . Is it His word or not?  If it’s His word, he commanded it.  It’s His idea, not mine.  And I’m not ashamed of it.’”He said put them to death Shall the church drag them in?  No, I’m not say [sic] that. The church has not been given the power of the [sic] sort; the government has.  But the government ought to [kill them]. You got a better idea?  A better idea than God?’”

Here’s a link to the sermon:
http://www.sermonaudio.com/playpopup.asp?SID=527121350272

I really don’t have much to add here except to hope a groundswell of support within religious communities for pastors to perhaps police each other.

This related article is from someone in the community and has an interesting take on the topic. Good for her for speaking out!:

[UPDATE] Anti-LGBT Rights Governor to Speak at Prominent Deaf Civil Rights Group’s National Conference

Governor Dennis Daugaard of S.D. (Photo – USA Today)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE: The governor announced that he will not be able to speak at the conference.]

The following is an article I wrote for The Huffington Post. If you wish, you can read the article directly on their site:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/courtney-odonnell/antilgbt-rights-governor-_b_1551679.html

——

I’m having a hard time figuring out the logic behind the decision making here. In the first place, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has existed since 1880, filling a dire need to ensure deaf people were afforded the same equal rights as hearing people. Indeed, the oppression of deaf people is a shameful chapter in America’s history and the NAD was at the forefront all this time fighting for equality and access for all deaf people.

It was a rather stunning surprise when I discovered the NAD scheduled South Dakota’s Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard as one of the primary speakers at its national conference being held this summer. It is no surprise to anyone that Gov. Daugaard opposes gay marriage and has stated that no individual groups should be given special privileges. Gov. Daugaard is allowed his views and since he was duly elected by the people of South Dakota, I’m not going to second guess their decision. But it is fairly clear that Daugaard’s view doesn’t belong at the NAD conference.

So why was he invited? It’s because he can sign. He comes from a deaf family. Although for reasons that make no sense to me, many in the deaf community hold (adult) hearing children of deaf parents in high regard — enough so, they’ll seeming toss aside their understanding of the meaning of the word “equality.”

In social media, the large deaf LGBT community is in an uproar. A website used by the community to follow the matter had previously collapsed under the traffic load, but I did manage to get a working link to another site which includes a decent summary of their position:

Why should NAD members care about Daugaard’s position on same sex marriage? Because the NAD’s invitation and response leaves us with some damning messages. Daugaard voted for the constitutional amendment in 2006 that defined marriage in South Dakota as being between one man and one woman. In other words, he supports legal discrimination against a minority group. This is a denial of equal access to citizenship and its privileges.

I must caution some in this group who are attempting to tie Gov. Daugaard to the closing of the school for the deaf in that state. That was an economic matter and he was not even governor at the time. Rumors of this type can backfire. Then there are a few who hurt their own causes by excluding non-deaf people from access to the information supporting their own claims.

At this moment the NAD is seemingly trying to appease the opposition to Daugaard by addition of a LGBT luncheon to the conference and the announcement of a new LGBT equality policy.

My feeling is the NAD is misjudging the strength of the overall LGBT movement in America. They should cut their losses and heed the call to replace Daugaard. There are plenty of prominent people in America that can sign; some are even LGBT advocates.

[UPDATE] clercjr – VRS Fraud ARCHIVES

clerc jr

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE: clercjr aka Dan Foster dies. See below.] Sadly, clercjr, a trustworthy tracker of all federal cases of VRS fraud has decided to end his blog due to health reasons.

This comprehensive tracking by clercjr clearly was time consuming to do and he has suggested that people save what they need in the event that his blog disappears from the net.  I have decided to archive many of his posts in on this page for future reference.

Please note that I may report on some new developments in newer posts, but I am not going to update anything on this page. This page is accurate as of clercjr’s last update on May 9, 2012. Any new developments since that date will NOT be reported on this page.

———-

UPDATE — June 11, 2012: From clercjr’s website:

Dan Foster (clercjr) has passed away

Dan never liked discussing medical matters in public so he isn’t about to start now, but passed away due to long illness with serious complications towards the end. That’s all he has authorized me to release.

Dan says it’s been a pleasure writing for you and also knowing various people including his family, long-time friends, and associates, all of which he appreciates.”

Longtime trusted friend of Dan’s and a former work colleague

VRS case: Blog Closing

9 05 2012

Well, dear reader, the time has come to think about closing at least the VRS part of this blog due to poor health. Still in hospital but out of the ICU and no longer spitting or vomiting pure blood. Body is failing and doctors thinks I might have weeks to a few months remaining.

Guess we’ll see, eh? :) A most interesting experience even if nasty. I will try my best to answer questions as long as I have internet access, time, and energy. This blog may disappear from DeafRead’s feed aggregation if or when I request it.

I doubt I can cover the July 10th sentencing so keep an eye on iDeafNews, other bloggers elsewhere, or perhaps guest bloggers here.

. . .

Back to the VRS cases: I left various documents, case numbers, NJ court pacer website link and info on how to set up a PACER account. So if interested, follow other good sources or PACER. Grab anything you want to keep since I’m not sure if or when the website would disappear. For now, probably only personal non-VRS posts will continue for a bit.

It has been my pleasure in writing to serve and educate you as well as answer public and private questions or comments to the best of my ability. Keep the fire to learn ongoing!

Regards,

Up next for new transgender Thai politician — a PhD, and perhaps, member of Parliament

Nok Yonlada (Photo – Bangkok Post)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Newly elected in a Thai provincial election, Yollada ”Nok” Suanyos, or Nok Yonlada, (both names have been used in news reports) by all accounts, is a trans woman on a mission. Propelled to the top by a backfiring attack on her trans status by an opponent, Nok now commands the attention of the people in her homeland and around the world as Thailand’s highest elected transgender official.  While prompted into politics by party insiders, it was her hard work that earned her the electors trust.

Nok is well-known transgender and LGB activist and is currently president of the Trans Female Association of Thailand. She helped get the  Sister’s Hand Project started — which offers free surgery to Gender Identity Disorder individuals.

For now, Nok plans to start work on local issues and hopefully down the road push for human rights laws — not just for LGBT people, but also for the elderly, patients and to stop racism. While she has an eye on perhaps running for a Parliament, she’s also pursuing a PhD and runs several businesses.

Hatred rears its ugly head after DOJ asks university to accommodate transgender student

Caroline May (photo- strategypage.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “Watch out, you ladies at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith: Those feet under the stall next to you might just belong to a 38-year-old man.” starts the article in The Daily Caller, written by Caroline May.

The article went on to say: “Despite opposition from female students, UAFS has decided on “advice of counsel” to allow a 38-year-old anatomically-male, transgendered student access to the women’s bathrooms on campus.”

My hunch is the majority of female students at the University of Arkansas at Fort Rock are on not board this hatred train ride.

This bit of hate journalism followed a UAFR policy change after transgender student Jennifer Braly filed a complaint with the U. S. Department of Justice regarding the college’s bathroom policy. The DOJ responded by sending the university officials a letter which prompted them to change their policy to accommodate trans students.

Jennifer Braly made the news a few weeks ago when the university stopped her from lecturing about transgender topics in class. Read more:

Yep, it’s still dangerous to be transgender in America

Gunner Scott (Photo – Boston.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — While many of us are already sharply tuned into the current state of being transgender in this country, Gunner Scott, the director of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, does a pretty nice job summing it up in a piece for The Boston Phoenix. I thought I’d touch on a few of the topics he covers in his article.

1) Transgender men and women who are visibly different from cis men and women are at higher risk for harm.

Not everyone “passes.” Some are at the beginning of their transition, posing additional difficulties. In the psychological sense, passing doesn’t matter – you are what you are and I agree with this. However, when it comes to the risk of being harmed, those that don’t pass face a higher degree of risk. This is something we just don’t talk about enough. I’d hate to suggest that we better start passing, or else! But the rate that we are being harmed, beaten and killed is staggering. What is the solution here?

2) Research indicate staggeringly dismal employment conditions.

These stats taken from a 2009 National Transgender Discrimination survey show unemployment rate for trans people at double the average and are four times likely to be surviving on less than $10,000 year than non-trans people. These conditions likely are the result of discrimination. This is also likely the cause for many trans people becoming sex workers. The recent EEOC ruling should help reverse these conditions and its something many of us are going to monitor closely.

3) The evaporation of rights one had before transition.

Scott: “It is frustrating to think that, before I transitioned from female to male, I had these rights and protections, but once I came to terms with who I was and began to let the rest of the world in on my reality, these rights and protections I’d grown accustomed to — like being treated fairly when trying to rent an apartment — evaporated.”

This is something I believe that we need to turn around and use it as an argument FOR equality. Rights should never be taken away from people. It’s amazing to me that we’re stripped of rights in the first place and we’re letting them get away with it!

Expanded housing advocacy project for transgender and LGB homeless launched in St. Louis, MO

Robyn Carolyn Montague (Photo – Hope and Help Center)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Taking a page from the existing TransHaven Project — an emergency and winter  shelter for homeless trans people — the newly launched St. Louis LGBT Shelter and Housing Advocacy Project aims to provide shelter that include all homeless LGBT people.

Spokesperson Robyn Carolyn Montague, who is also the founder of the TransHaven Project:  “The Project’s goal is for the advocacy and creation of safe and affirming emergency and transitional shelters. Our aim is for long-term housing, accessing existing shelter resources in the region and the creation of a LGBT-specific housing environment, for homeless LGBT adults in the St. Louis area.”

Montague, a street volunteer for other homeless causes, did extensive background work into the need of LGBT-specific shelters, including the visitation of the city’s other shelters and locations homeless people have known to frequent. She has also met with city officials numerous times prior to the formation of this group.

With the launch underway, Montague is already in talks with other shelters, confident of eventual LGBT acceptance. I wish her success with the project and appreciation for her years of trans and LGBT advocacy!

Anyone with contact information for the St. Louis LGBT Shelter and Housing Advocacy Project please post it in the comments section.

Courtney O’Donnell: Why I Did an About-Face and Boarded the Jenna Talackova PR Train

Jenna Talackova (Photo – Rueters)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — (From my article in The Huffington Post:) Transgender Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna Talackova cracked the top 12 in the final night of the pageant. Although she didn’t win, I was rooting for her the entire way, because over the past few weeks I’ve come to realize that you can’t buy this kind of positive PR. And when such an opportunity comes your way, you’ve got to milk it for all it’s worth to win the hearts and minds of those wary of all things trans.

Transgender soccer player scores big against prejudice

Miranda Salman (Photo – Facebook)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Miranda Salman, knocked out of a sport known for “masculine ethos,” returns again, this time as a woman, and ends up as one of the top players on an all-women soccer team in Mexico.

Salman previously played soccer professionally as a man, but a broken ankle and harassment over her feminine mannerism put an end to her first go at the game. Marriage, a kid, and sex reassignment surgery followed. Eight years later she’s back on the field, and according to a teammate, she’s the best player on the team.

Salman told her story in an International Day Against Homophobia PR video. Further research into Salman’s background returned a lot of interesting hits, but my Spanish, by a long shot, isn’t good enough for use in the media. If anyone can provide further information about her, post it in this blog’s comment section! I can tell you she has 75,000 subscribers to her personal Facebook page – that’s a heck of a lot of people following a transgender soccer player!

[UPDATE - Thousands protest pastor] Pastors call for the death of LGBT people

Death to gays they say!

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE-Over 1,000 people protest hate pastor. See below.] “Build a great, big, large fence . . . put all the lesbians in there. Do the same thing for the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can’t get out…and you know what, in a few years, they’ll die out…do you know why? They can’t reproduce!”

This was said by Charles L. Worley, Pastor of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina, captured in a video. But he wasn’t done yet: “It makes me pukin’ sick to think about — I don’t even whether or not to say this in the pulpit — can you imagine kissing some man?” Now, he’s done.

—————

UPDATE: NEWTON, N.C., May 27 (Reuters) – More than 1,000 people on Sunday protested a small-town North Carolina Baptist minister’s sermon calling for gays and lesbians to be locked up behind an electric fence, a fire-and-brimstone speech viewed hundreds of thousands of times on the Internet since given two weeks ago.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/27/protesters-denounce-minis_n_1549339.html

————-

Mississippi state Rep. Andy Gipson, who is reportedly a minister at an undisclosed Baptist church, made a post on Facebook last week invoking a passage from the Bible that requires the death of LGBT people. In the ensuing uproar that followed, Gipson refused to apologize, saying he has overwhelming support.

I bring these things to your attention as a reminder that there are those in our society who see no problem with the demise of transgender people – death! To keep them at bay, we must continue to elect to public office those that will vote FOR our well-being, even if one disagrees with them on other matters. Our lives and civil rights come first, does it not?

WARNING: Violent “cross-dressing” prostitutes on the loose in Atlanta says NBC’s WXIA 11

Transvestite Prostitute Warning?

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — They have rocks and knives — RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Geez, talk about irresponsible journalism. If I were to fill in the blanks, We’d have a whole other story here — documented studies of trans people shunned by society from gainful employment, scraping by on the streets, all the while trying to defend themselves from harm.

“Residents in Midtown have been dealing with the problem of cross-dressing prostitutes for decades. Decades.” (Decades, and no one figured out they’re not crossdressers, never mind why they’re there in the first place.)

“The situation has become even more critical than it has been in the past, given police warnings that the prostitutes have become more “aggressive” and pose a threat to anyone who tries to confront them.” (Maybe they’re tired of being beaten.)

A neighbor who says his friends were attacked and robbed: “They gave them everything they wanted, but they still kind of beat them up. I think it was most likely the cross-dressers and their pimps.” (Kind of? Likely? You mean you’re guessing? And the station aired the remarks?)

I’m just going to hold these people at this station accountable for their actions. The by-line: Keith Whitney. The station: WXIA-TV, an NBC affiliate in Atlanta. The monker: 11 Alive. The owners: The Gannett Company.

Transgender beauty contestant Jenna Talackova cracks top 12, doesn’t make top 5 – photos

Jenna Talackova (Photo – Canadian Press)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — [UPDATE  The Miss Universe Canada pageant is over. She made it to the top 12. Congrats to Jenna. More below.]

While Jenna Talackova’s story is familiar to everyone, rivals now are complaining the spotlight is on Jenna, not them. These comments came up during an intermission on Thursday during the pageant.

On the upside, pageant organizers report the event has drawn twice as much media attention as last year. Judges say they’re remaining impartial, and one states he doesn’t know the identity of the transgender contestant.

UPDATE – May 19, 2012:

TORONTO (AP) — The first-ever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant strutted the runway Saturday night, making it to the penultimate round before losing her bid to win the title. Jenna Talackova, 23, competed with 61 contestants and was among the final 12 contestants before failing to make the final five in the glitzy pageant. Sahar Biniaz, 26, claimed the crown and advances to the international Miss Universe competition in December.

UK ad watchdog bans “spot the stallions from the mares” TV commercial

Paddy Power “Spot the stallions from the mares” commercial

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — “Spot the stallions from the mares”? Yes, it is what you think. A television commercial which prompted viewers to spot transgender women in a crowd was banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority. The spot was created for Paddy Power, an Irish bookmaker.

Complaints, along with input from social media and the Kent Transgender Forum likely compelled the ASA to take action, although they downplayed social media’s role.

From the ASA: “The suggestion that trans people could be segregated into the gender stereotypes ‘stallions’ and ‘mares’ as part of a guessing game, trivialised a complex and difficult issue and objectified them in a way that was likely to cause them serious offence. . .”

Paddy Power is still running the ad in places where the ASA has no authority, such as on YouTube. Paddy Power claims they consulted with a trans organization prior to running the ad but there are some disputes over the facts.

Watch the video:

This incident brings to mind an another controversial TV ad from Australia (Libra tampon) I wrote about earlier this year:

Prison guard transits to female, keeps job at tough male-only prison

Andrea Roussel (Photo – thestar.com)

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Nearly twenty years on the job and Andrea Roussel decided it was time. It’s difficult to think of another more dangerous workplace to be at while transiting, but Roussel, a former football player and wrestler, was ready.

Prison administrators worked with Roussel as she presented as a woman prior to sex reassignment surgery. This was a difficult time for Roussel as her fear of being ridiculed by the prisoners became a reality. Rumors about a “tranny” spread through the prison and she worried about physical attacks. But she was determined not to quit.

Her path to transition is familiar to many trans people — parental pressure, suicide attempts, loneliness, and therapy.

Roussel on her youth: “I used to practise [sports] every day. I didn’t want to go home . . . I tried not to go home. If I went home and wasn’t busy, the urge of being Andrea would be too strong.”

It’s now been over 2 years since SRS and she is still a guard at Toronto’s the Don jail, handling Canada’s most troublesome male prisoners.

Chloe Sevigny portrays a transgender contract killer in UK’s “Hit & Miss” TV series

Chloe Sevigny, a trans hit woman in “Hit & Miss”

THE GUERRILLA ANGEL REPORT — Exploitation? Maybe. But I’m willing to give this series a shot because Sevigny portrays a pre-op trans woman taking hormones. She’s fitted with prosthetic penis to bring a bit of realism to the character and themes in the series include sexual identity and family — she has a son in the series.

But she’s also a hit woman. Television is a tough venue – you’ve got to have a hook if it’s to sell. If done right, I’d say we’ve a chance to humanize trans people for the masses. By all accounts, the trans character is cool and human. Sevigny will certainly be a great draw who, according to some reports, researched the role before filming began.

Hit & Miss is a six-part series scheduled to air this month in the UK, if my information is correct, on Sky Atlantic.
